3-DAY ESTIMATES FROM SHOWBIZDATA

1. NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM II: ESCAPE FROM THE SMITHSONIAN FOX 4,096 53,500,000 13,061 53,370,000
2. TERMINATOR SALVATION WARNER BROS. 3,530 42,870,000 12,144 56,242,491
3. STAR TREK PARAMOUNT 4,053 $22,140,000 5,462 183,774,019
4. ANGELS & DEMONS SONY 3,527 21,265,000 6,029 81,375,626

4-DAY ESTIMATES FROM DEADLINEHOLLYWOODDAILY:

1. NATM2 - $67 million
2. TS - $52 million
3. STAR TREK - $29.7 million
4. A&D - $27.5 million

If these estimates are accurate, Star Trek will be close to $191 million at the domestic box office after Monday, and $270 million worldwide.

$29 million would represent a 33% drop, more than Iron Man's 18% drop over last Memorial Day weekend (Iron Man's 4th weekend). Trek's 3-day estimate of $22 million is a 9% drop, larger than Iron Man's third weekend drop of 38%, but close to Batman Begins 43% drop.

Iron Man was in its 4th week, Trek is in its 3rd.

Then it looks like Trek is running out of steam, I think IMAX must have kept the grosses up more than we realised.

I don't know if I'd go as far as to say it's running out of steam. Close to $30 million for a third weekend is still a good number.

Well I just put the latest figures into my Star Trek vs Iron Man @ 75% chart and Trek has fallen behind for the first time. The figures bring $250 Million into question. Trek will have to rebound next week if $250+ is feasible.

Regardless of this, its still a success though!

That's true. I was expecting a few million more this weekend, probably $8 million Mon-Thurs, and a 35% 3-day drop to $14-15 million. That would give the film around $215 million after next weekend. $250 million may be tough.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I think there are still a lot of people who have not got the word of mouth.

Random folks I talk to at the grocery checkout, the guys giving us a battery jump in the movie parking lot, the ladies from Merry Maids, etc., all gave me kind of a shrug when I asked them about the Star Trek movie.

I think Trek movies still have a lot to recover from in the grass-roots buzz department; I hope people will continue to get their curiosity piqued and keep going and find out different.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

well I am still happy, not many of us truly believed, hoped perhaps, but not believed that Trek would make the $200 million mark even before the end of may, which it will certainly do .

By the way, the Terminator team can't be happy with only a $52 million opening weekend...

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

This weekend was undoubtedly affected by T4. In my mind, that makes next weekend something of a wild card. Given T4 is apparently not that good, it may depend on how many people respond to, "Wanna see T4 again?" with "Nah, not worth it. Let's go see Star Trek."
$215 after next weekend would mean when it's all over, the $230 million pre-release U.S. estimates were quite accurate. Not too bad a comeback for a moribund franchise.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

to me the most important question is what was iron man up against in its 3 and 4th weeks.

i honestly dont remember.

star trek was dealing with three movies that were all projected to do much better then it.

including two that just opened up on the same weekend.

Looks like 225-235 Is going to be the number. I was hoping to pass TMP, but alas.

The film is not running out of steam at all. It's in it's third week and lost only 33%. That is very solid. It may not make Iron Man or Indiana Jones money (this time out) but the film has re-established the ST brand name in the market place in a major way.

Don't forget that ST held up very well against T4 in it's first head to head with a major sci/fi genre picture. It is possible/ likely that T4 will have a major decline in it's 2nd week + ST will continue to have small/stable drops.

Stay positive...

The film is days away from topping $200 million dollars in the U.S. alone and easily topping reboots like "Batman Begins", "Casino Royale" and "Superman Returns"

Whatever way you look at it "Star Trek" is a stunning success at the box office that has saved the franchise.

Most films don't make 30 million in there OW never mind close to that in there 3rd weekend. TREK BBS the only place where $191 million after 3 weeks is given negative comments

LOOK AT T-4 for god sake thats going to crash & burn worser in US market than Wolverine.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

If these numbers hold I am shocked at how poorly "Terminator Salvation" performed at the box office.

I didn't think T4 would be a "Dark Knight" like blockbuster, but those numbers are very disappointing. They also bode well for "Star Trek" going forward as it is the only genre competition ST has to face for some time to come.

Yeah I know its doing fantastic!!!

I wasn't trying to sound negative, I was just saying that $250 Million is being called into question.

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

I can't believe some of the negative comments about the films box office performance thus far.

For Christ sake "STAR TREK IS THE NUMBER 1 MOVIE IN AMERICA FOR 2009 and still making $30 million per weekend at the box office... What else do you want?

Did you expect it to make $500 million in the U.S.? I think some people are being totally unrealistic in their expectations.

Only a few months ago this franchise was dead and buried. Now it is days away from topping $200 million and on it's way to major blockbuster status and some of you guys are disappointed?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Iron Man didn't have two (potential) blockbusters opening on Memorial Day weekend. Prince of the Caspian might be Terminator Salvation, but Night at the Museum II is a true hit.

Angels & Demons will drop much more next week, as will T4, perhaps letting Star Trek wind up in the 2 position next weekend behind NatM.

Wouldn't that be special?

Re: Weekend Estimates - Star Trek #3 - $29 million - $191 million

Terminator's numbers are abysmal....at least for a movie with that kind of budget and that kind of ad campaign. In all likelihood, it'll barely end up making more $ than Watchmen.

"Up" will be #1 next weekend. All you want out of ST is a solid hold in it's 4th weekend... Which by the way I think you will get.
