So are there really only a handful of actors in the UK /s they had to dig up someone from the past to be the next regeneration? If you haven't seen it yet or a leak it's Billie Piper and the Doctor says "I'm Rose"

mentioned in this post...

My Formal Introduction to Doctor Who

...when I first watched Doctor Who and how an issue of StarLog (printed around a year earlier) helped prepare me for the wilds adventures and concepts that awaited me. But I should note that magazine article was not my first exposure!

No, that happened around October of 1976 when I purchased issue 129 of "Famous Monsters of Filmland". I got it because the cover story focused upon the recently released "FutureWorld", the sequel to the Michael Crichton sci-fi thriller about a high tech amusement park run amuck. Among the various secondary articles was one that, at the time I majorly rolled my eyes because the "creatures" it featured seemed, well, less than convincing. It was titled "The Daleks Invade England!"

Famous Monsters of Filmland # 129: The Daleks Invade England!

While I'm certain I read the article, I didn't retain much about the text except a truly wretched play on words, "Dr. Who, son of Dr. Fu?" What did stick with me were pictures of an insanely spiny and quilled biped with a bug-like head, a man sized "ant" costume with obviously human legs compared to the spindly forelimbs, a man dressed like a butterfly for a grade school play and these odd tapered "cylinders" capped with domes, seemingly useless domes peppered over the lower half and...a toilet plunger for an arm?! If you've already clicked the link, you'll know I'm describing (from a clueless 13 year old's perspective) Koquillon from "The Rescue", the Zarbi and the Menoptra from "The Web Planet", and, of course, the Daleks. But I deemed it "silly" and "childish" and immediately forgot about it.

Flash forward to the 21st century. David Tennant was the current Doctor, maybe Matt Smith. Something reminded me about that article in "Famous Monsters". I lost that magazine copy years earlier, but thankfully it had been posted to the Internet Archive. I decided to read it again from a (hopefully) wiser angle. Something immediately caught my attention. There was no picture of the Doctor or the TARDIS, only those four visually distinctive, and oddly early monsters. The lack of the Doctor kinda' makes sense given the thrust of the magazine, focus on the creatures. But why just those from the first two years? Reading the brief article revealed that. Though published in a 1976 issue, this was clearly written in 1965, likely just after "The Web Planet" wrapped production! Imagine, at that time, the series had only just presented the first few of many tropes now intrinsic to the series, the departure of a traveling companion, Susan, and the introduction of another, Vicki. There no concept of regeneration (renewal, whatever); there was simply William Hartnell as a mysterious (human?) man from the future, cut off from his civilization. The Daleks had just appeared for the second time. The author of the article wasn't even sure what was supposed to be inside the shells, speculating they could have been slug-like, or fuzzy spider shapes or even apes with 2=3 eyes and 4 arms! Oh, and he was told what the letters in TARDIS represented, he couldn't recall (though his second guess was somewhat close). It's just freaky reading something so early in the show's history.

Point being, this article was my very first exposure to Doctor Who in any way, shape or form! I never dreamed that in 6 years time, it would develop into a lifelong passion (okay, maybe "obsession").
