WIP: U.S.S. Bozeman revisited--aka Unused TSFS Ship Design.

That would have been my reply as well - the shape of the hull pod is fine, but its positioning in the original sketch is way too far back. jon1701's modification is more like the Springfield with a centered pod, and that does look better.

I like this ship, I think she is a lot better than the ship in TNG. I also like the
nacells they resemble those of the Oberth class.

Gep, a late suggestion:
I don't think you should make this into a mini-Reliant. Try to keep the shape more distinct. Rather than connecting the 3 and 9 oclock points of the circle with the end of the rear extension as on Reliant, Keep the primary hull mostly as a circle with a straight-sided rectangular rear extension for the impulse drive. Also, do away with that top-side step-up to the rear deck.

Here's a little history about the Bozeman. (You probably already know this, but I'm gonna write it anyway :-))

The original idea for "Cause and Effect" was for the Enterprise-D to collide with a TOS Constitution class ship. However, it was cost-prohibitive to build an all-new TOS Connie model just for this one episode, so that idea was nixed. But they couldn't build any other new model either, as the Soyuz class was described as a ship class that had been decommissioned 80 years ago. So they had to use a model they already had, with modifications to make it into a new class that we'd never see again after the episode.

The burning question is: Why the hell didn't they just use the TMP Enterprise-A, relabeled as the Bozeman? It would have been perfect, as it's still a Constitution class ship that wouldn't be around by TNG time.

The movie Enterprise model was very large and heavy compared to all the other models they had. It was simply too tough to use on a TV scale.

After noting that there seems to be some confusion over the size of the ship, I realized that the way I handled the top of the saucer made decks four and five (or so) look like the deck two superstructure, and the real deck two look like the entire bridge. Oops. So I removed some control points to eliminate the seeming seamline between the two and added tubolifts to the bridge dome to help identify the components. I think it's clearer now what's going on. For the record, I'm intending this to be the same size as the Reliant--two decks on the edge of the saucer, and that kind of thing.

Got a start on the UV maps today, as well as continuing to add nurnies and crap all over. I took the advice about the secondary hull position, but split the difference by only moving it forward part of the suggested distance and legnthining the nacelles to compensate, which gives a better look overall.

Gep, I love the way this is coming together. Really starting to look good with the detail on it.

She's definately got a good looking profile now.

I like the double slits on the nacelle struts at the top. Just detail or is there anything going on in there?

Just detail. But they were on the Constitution-class refit, so I figured why the hell not? :D

Man, I really like how this has turned out so far. Keep going with what feels good, as I think that's working out best for you, so far. At least, where my own sense of aesthetics is concerned. :techman:

WOW! :)

I'm glad you are trying something different with a trek ship, I was getting sick of all those Conny wips, everyone was doing. This is soooo much better!

Kewl Man! :techman:

This is all highly cool, but as a former artist, the idea that my scratch art and thumbnails would be turned into something polished is a nightmare. Poor Nilo!

I agree. The impulse engines need to have their scale corrected. Nice work overall so far though. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses.

I've been addressing it so far by adding all the doodads and crap around the impulse vents, trying to shrink the vents themselves down to a reasonable size. They're still a bit large, but I figure the rest can be explained away by saying this an experimental testbed ship and it had a new type of engine. If it was decommissioned 80 years before TNG, as stated in the episode, even though other movie-era designs like the Excelsior, Miranda and Oberth are still around, we can then assume that the experimental design was a failure and the whole line was scrapped.

At least that's how I'm rationalizing it. :D
