WIP NX - 5150-A

Well, I've finally gotten my act together & taken the plunge, and have started a task that isn't NEARLY so much "fun" as it is "work," and have started roughing out the top, front, back and bottom views. I've taken a hint from reading pointers from various artists on various boards, and taken to heart the advice to not get my heart set on a "perfect" side view, only to discover that it would be an impossible shape in 3-D.

Here's my basic (dare I say "basic" or even "nearly talentless") draft of the top view:

NX 5150 top view

(I think my biggest problem is that I'm trying to teach myself how to do this on a design with curves that are far too complex for a beginner.)

Sadly, when I started constructing the front view, I could see right away that the narrow saucer looks silly against the wide secondary hull.

I shall have to consider widening the whole project, or widening only the saucer while either raising or lowering the nacelles.

Wow! That side view/top view is great. The top shape has a hint of Voyager, but overall the curves are much nicer...top bad Voyager didn't look like this. (I always thought Voyager was a little too squat and chunky towards the rear...my humble opinion ofcourse).

I'm inspired again.
Guess I need to work on my curves too.

Now (the side profile on) that sketch is absolutely, completely utterly astonishingly breathtaking. I'm drooling here.

I love it!

I really can't do 3d very well (I mean, I can do 3d and make it look good, just not replicate something that's not 3d down to the details -- I don't know how to actually accomplish certain shapes), otherwise I'd try to model it in a heartbeat. That is, if you wouldn't mind. But since I can't, it's not an issue. But I hope somebody else can. Because this looks wonderful.

I know you love it. I design breathtaking spaceships to make up for my other limitations - such as, namely, that when women see me naked, they don't "drool" so much as "vomit.":wah:

I've never even tried 3D! Oh, I picked up a teaching version of Maya 2008 but never had the time or self-direction to learn it. Always excuses with me... I even bought a professional-grade WACOM Intuos4 pen tablet drawing pad, but gave it to my mom 'cuz it wasn't what I REALLY wanted: the Cintiq 12WX with direct pen-on-screen input, so I don't have to worry about hand and screen coordination. Or even better yet, dare I hope to ever own a Cintiq 21UX? Talk about drooling!

But yeah, if anyone with the skills wanted to turn my sketches into models, feel free. I'd be honored.

Well, I've used my new Wacom and started tinkering with this one again. Here's what she looks like as of 10 AM Arizona time:

BTW, since I haven't done any top, front and rear views, you probably have no idea how wide this thing is supposed to be.

Neither do I.

I tried drawing those views once, with the nacelles placed at a pretty conventional distance. The top view looked GREAT! But with fhe front view, the saucer was SO small it looked stoooooooopid. :( . My only solution seems to be to make the secondary hull very, very VERY wide, like a broad triangle. That way, the saucer can be reasonably wide, but the nacelles' Bussard collectors will still clear the saucer rim.

Thanks! But I'm having a HELL of a time trying to visualize how all the parts go together. I have screwed myself big-time by going for all these complex curves!

Anyone wanna toss in their two cents? Can you do it with sketches?

Well, here's what she look like as of 4PM Arizona Time 9/10/2009.

I must say, figuring out what the neck should look like is a BITCH!

(Also, the bridge area looks too conventional. I'm seriously toying with the idea that the bridge should be buried deep in the saucer, like Galactica's CIC or like Probert had originally conceived the Enterprise D. The "bridge" area could then be a sensor array or a weapons pod or a seafood restaurant or something.)

Welcome to my world... the biggest reason I haven't finished my Ambassador model. It's in my head but I need time to figure out how to model it.

I just dropped in to let you know you're doing a great job and I'm glad to see you've stuck with it.

It'll come to you,... believe me.
Andrew-

Thanks!

I only wish I was in Vegas NEXT weekend, instead of right now. THEN, I would come to you,... and hand you the bloody thing and say, "Here, YOU fix this neck, I'm heading to The Venetian hotel for a buffet!":guffaw:

Seriously love this ship - could imagine it being an Enterprise-F or Enterprise-G type vessel, though a much higher registry would probably be needed for any prototype.
