Windows 8??

I'm looking forward to it. I'd like to see the standard desktop environment. So far, I think all I've seen is the tablet based touch interface they'll use. I want to see what I'll be using on my desktop.

Vista was released in 2006, 7 was released in 2009, and 8 is supposed to come out sometime next year, so it's a fairly consistent schedule.

The lag time between XP and Vista was unusual. Microsoft normally doesn't go more than a few years between versions.

It's amazing how entrenched XP became. It didn't really help that a lot of people decided to skip Vista or downgrade from it. For many, Windows 7 was the first upgrade in possibly 8-9 years. I upgraded to Vista in 2007 and Windows 7 in 2011.

We still use XP at work. It's kind of funny that my software at home is more advanced than what I use in a professional setting.

Yeah, we still use XP at my job, although new systems being rolled out have Windows 7 on them. The computer I use was downgraded from Vista.

The Vista rollout was completely botched. It got a bad reputation because it didn't have all the kinks worked out, and Microsoft allowed systems that couldn't run it well to be labeled "Vista Capable." Gave most people the impression that it was a slow, buggy, bloated mess.

At least they learned their lesson there. Windows 7 is much better, in my opinion.

Well, in the case of companies still using XP, it comes down to ROI. XP could still do everything that Vista could do and 7 for that matter from a productivity standpoint and runs on older hardware. Why would they upgrade? For some fancy new interface? ha. Add to that the aforementioned problems with Vista and it was a pretty easy choice for corporate to skip an upgrade cycle.

It's actually not uncommon to have higher tech at home than in the office. Home users are much more willing to deal with bleeding edge technology.

Same here. IS has a plan to roll out 7 over the next 2.5 to 3 years as they replace everyone's laptops.

Behind that incredibly ugly touchscreen interface - really, who came up with the colour scheme and that ugly shade of green here? It is kind of symptomatic for Microsoft's approach to design, though. - the desktop environment in the videos showcasing the developer build looked just like the one used in Windows 7. I certainly don't expect anything spectacular or really new in that regard.
If you're interested in a variety of more or less shiny desktop environments you have to turn to Linux or Unix (although most of the free Unix distros seem to use just Gnome these days).
I certainly won't update (my laptop is still on XP) but my father plans to. It'll be interesting to see what the hardware requirements are. Has a more precise release date been published, by the way?

I've had the developers preview for a few months. I showed it to my professor and he thought it was "neat"

We all laughed at the new "blue screen of Death" and how it's been dumbed down

Lots more games than usual

I'm hoping it's as stable (or moreso) as Windows 7. I likely won't upgrade right away anyway.

I won't be upgrading to Windows 8, at least not for a very long time. I have 7 and am very happy with it - also a big fan of XP Pro.

I did have Vista for a short time - after the first service pack came out it really wasn't all that bad (but I turned off all the fancy stuff so my machine would run quicker).

Windows 2000 Pro was also a very good operating system.

I just got 7 a few months ago, so I'll be damned if I'm gonna be using 8 anytime soon. I imagine it will just come with the next computer I buy, same as my "upgrade" to 7.

Yeah. For me, lack of money and a teeming desire to try new technologies never works out well.

That's how I did it when I bought my HP. Win 7 had just came out, and HP was offering a free upgrade from Vista. Well, the PC was what I wanted in spec, so I went ahead and bought it (and paid about $100 less than I would if I would have built it myself). Got the upgrade about 2 months later, and have loved Win 7 ever since. That was 2009.

Yeah I'm probably going to do the same thing. I was thinking about picking up a new laptop recently. I think I'll just wait for some Windows 8 machines to come out.

How has it been changed?

It's more user friendly. It gets rid of all that "jibberish" people don't understand lol.
