Windfall?

I would buy a shitload, I mean a Shitload of land in Iowa, USA, hire the best cutting edge experts in Propulsion, Exotic Metals, Physics, Theoretical Physics, Partical Physics, Physics they do not have shit for yet, Space-Time Theory, and about a thousand other disciplines, and get to work!

(In the nuUniverse, how do we know HIjol didn't invent the thing?)

That's the Ticket!!!

I knew a guy who had a Million dollars plus or minus and he said that your problems don't go away with more money they just get more expensive. He had been sued by a couple of different people trying to get a big part of his pie, those are the problems you find when you've got a lot of money. Subject to simple Human greed. Not trying to dampen anyone's enthusiasm, just imparting some knowledge. :)

Of course, that's just one persons experience...

My first steps would be to pay off my student loans and the student loans of my friends.

After that, I have no idea. Maybe open a bar.

I would imagine that you'd have lots of new and old "friends" coming out of the woodwork, and relatives wanting various things.

I'd be ready for that one. I have a full list of names, in my head, of the people who have been good to me, and the people who have stepped on me while I was down. That will come into play.

That's a huge amount of money, one of those figures you can't quite get your head around until some bright journo points out you're now richer than Brad Pitt (or someone).

I don't see how it can't fail to radically change your life, even beyond all the friends and family crawling out of the woodwork, the charities and begging letter etc, how do you handle the friends and family who have always been with you, do you become the guy who always picks up the tab, do you take them on expensive holidays every year, are you patronising if you do or a miser if you don't? And look at it from the other angle, would you want to feel beholden to your mega rich friend?

I like the idea of being rich (who doesn't) but I think I like the idea of having a more low key fortune (if there is such a thing) Enough money that I can provide for me and those closest to me, and treat friends and family on occasion, and do my bit for a charitable cause or two, but not so much that I have to stick my head well above the parapet of my modest castle!

It's like fame, I've never understood people who just want to be famous, why would you want everyone and his uncle recognising you no matter where you go, why would you want paparazzi taking your pictures every second of the day. I imagine it must be nice to have the world revolve around you, but that it gets old really fast. I always quite liked the idea of being a fairly successful author who people barely notice, but then every couple of months have someone excitedly come up to me and say "Excuse me, you are him aren't you?"

Back to the topic, if I won that amount of money I'd have to do something with it, either by donating a large chunk to various charities and/or by setting up a trust or a foundation or something. I couldn't just sit on it Scrooge McDuck style.

Indeed. Being obscure is much more fulfilling.

As for what I'd do if faced with a windfall: Hope I remembered to bring a parachute

It is like high school where certain people just had to be popular and they were often from families who could afford their every indulgence. Unless there are some wacky shenanigans no body who is poor is seeking fame like how most on YT and social media in general try to.

ETA: I also realize that some just are perusing a dream and become famous in the process. :)

Tay I love you using the word "shenanigans"!

You are correct, of course, and I might also say that in some cases of individuals wanting/needing fame, there might be insecurities and character flaws at play.

I would be happy with a million. :bolian:

That's what I think is so funny about these giant numbers. Hell, I would be happy with $50,000. That would be enough to set my affairs in order so I could start fresh. A million dollars is more than I'd know what to do with, let alone several hundred million.

Any amount is great but I want enough to get distance from my family and my parents owe on a mortgage and $50k wouldn't do it.

After a time, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing after all as wanting.

Spock obviously never won a lottery.

For a million - you could make some sensible investments and maybe retire a few years earlier but the mistake a lot of people make with that sort of money is that they buy stuff... and a few years later they are bankrupt...

It's also why generally the lottery winners who appear publically are always working class, the middle classes quietly take the money and see a financial adviser.

My older sister once said wisely, "The only people who say money can't buy happiness have never been poor."
