Windfall?

I've actually thought about this a bit, and I have a plan/fantasy of what I would do if I ever came into that kind of money. There's the usual pay off debts of loved ones, etc. There would still be a LOT left after that, which I would invest somewhere fairly safe to create a reliable revenue stream. This is where it gets a bit more interesting. I am a researcher at a public university in the west. There are a lot of good researchers here who are doing good work, but we're not somewhere people generally think of when they think of a large research institution. If I had that kind of money, I would use it to give anonymous no-strings-attached grants to researchers here. For example, say I learned of someone in the Plant Science department who had some good ideas that were just too risky and they couldn't get funding for that. I would anonymously give them a few hundred grand to explore those ideas as they saw fit. I would love to see my colleagues here not have to worry and fight so much for funding, and if I came into a windfall like that, I would do something about that.

After reading this Thread, it occurs to me that, if there is some kind of "Qualifying" information needed to win Big Bucks, this Threadis it!!!!!

What fine ideas we all have for the uses of such Largess (save for that one Post about the"... bevy of bountiful babes...", or whatever) and how worthy our plans are.

Now, the trick is to somehow get this Thread, or a transcript thereof, into the hands of some Financier with more money than God, so that she or he can see that we are the place for the money to be!!!!

If I was really going to go out there with a more wild idea it would be start a gaming studio and try to get my MMORPG idea going.

I'd give a lot of the money to the refit project--to the TOS E restoration (if they would have me) and to great model makers like Shaw.

When my parents were alive, I wanted to buy them a nice place of their own choosing. Sadly... :(

Anyway, in roughly this order:
Set up a fund (investments etc) that would ensure I never want again.
Make sure the SO would never want again (these two could be exclusive).
Buy houses for my kids
Pay off my nieces and nephews tertiary education debts, so they can start fresh.
Help my brother out with his business problems.
Pay off my siblings's homes plus a little for the bank
Build my dream home, with library, media/viewing room, large study, recording studio, and a viewing gallery, where little bits of family history (pictures, paintings, some oblects from our collective past) would be displayed, with multiple guest rooms and the study located in a tower (2-3 storey) overlooking the valley it would be built in. I even have a rough floorplan for the house. :)

On a slightly different note, how would you fgeel about a new lotter we have hee in NSW: $20,000/month for 20 years? Regual sustantive income, duration of decades, doesn't allow you to go stupid. What do you think?

You occasionally get things like that in the UK, some scratch cards have similar things £50,000 a year for life, that sort of thing.

It might stop you being stupid, or you might just find a way around that (borrow heavily using your guaranteed monthly income as collateral) and I guess if you wanted to do something substantial (buy a big house, set up a business etc.) you'd need to do that.

I like the sound of your dream house btw :)

What would I do?

Take care of me and husband, his family, my family, college costs for nieces/nephews, college loans for friends, and travel. Then there's looking out for others, more like those stories you hear/read about, where "all" someone needs to get on their feet is a relatively small amount of money, making a difference one at a time, in small pieces.
