William Shatner Confirms Talks for Star Trek Return at 93 Years Old

Exactly Shatner's point for never having returned for any other production since GEN (until OTOY's short film). He was always very resistant to any kind of perfunctory cameo-style role. It needs to mean something and be contingent to the plot, not "stunt casting". This was one of the biggest reasons Nimoy and several of the other TOS cast never returned for GEN. Shatner's very protective of his character, and he has every right to be.
Don't fool yourself. As far as William Shatner returning to the role of Captain Kirk for the current management of Paramount Pictures all boils down to the size of the paycheck.

And that's not a knock at William Shatner at all; but even at this point he wants to make sure he's well paid for returning to a role that he always felt negatively Typecast him in the eyes of casting agents in the long run. So for any return to that role, he expects to be generously compensated because Paramount will be making tons of money off of it well after he's dead.

I doubt that matters, as the people currently in charge of Star Trek seem to have no desire to bring him back, despite what some fans with overactive imaginations might believe or want.

Yeah, Shatner is Star Trek...He's return brings instant positive buzz and is the biggest thing to happen to Star Trek in the general publics eye in decades.

Apparently, there is a group of writers who agree with me and are drafting (or have drafted) a script to include Shatner. Why do you suggest it would be "vapid" or "pointless"?

Shatner's return would bring bigger ratings and more positive buzz than all of Lower Decks and Discovery combined.
All you’re talking about is buzz and ratings. I’ve yet to hear anything substantive about a story that justifies a 94-year-old actor reprising a role he hasn’t played on screen in 31 years.

A franchise that’s only capable of looking backward is not one that’s thriving. It’s a move of desperation to cash in on nostalgia.

Again, people just want the feels. Not depth, not substance nor story.

A commentary exists in there somewhere I'm sure.

Haha. No.

I don't care fi its a Picard S03 style episode or movie full of nothing but memberberries and nostalgia. I want that emotional high. It would be a tragedy to not see Shatner in the role one more time before its too late.

Have OTOY produce this unfilmed scene:

Perhaps an enhanced "Admiral 'Talking Head' on the Comm-Screen" role?
Numerous cuts, back and forth, between him and Strategy Groups addressing the Latest Threat To The Galaxy?...between him and key starships "en route"?...between him and some other familiar faces as they plan and engage with the Threat?...

Captain Kirk is my favourite Captain by a country mile, and I absolutely loved Shatner's portrayal of him.

That said, the character is dead. He died the way he wanted, making a difference.

Would I get misty-eyed seeing him in the role one last time? Sure. But is it required? No, not if it doesn't make sense. I don't want to see him just for the sake of seeing him. Sometimes it's best to just leave things alone.

If they come up with some great reason for him to make an appearance, I'll happily watch along and probably roll a tear or two. But don't just shoehorn him into something just because you can.

I love Michelle Yeoh, who at this moment and for some time now has been more in demand internationally for films and television than Shatner ever has been at any given time in his professional career - "icon" or not.

That's just a fact.

That said, Yeoh's headlining Section 31 wasn't reason enough for me to watch a TV movie that looked like a dog. I haven't seen it.

The same applies to Shatner. If they stuck him in a project that didn't look good otherwise, I wouldn't bother with it.

I like Kirk a lot. I'm not sentimental about Shatner.

You think because someone writes something, somehow it cannot be either vapid and pointless?

You need only look at your posts in this thread, all of which (I assume) were written by you and succeed in being both.
