William Riker's Beard

I compiled this image of the various looks of William Riker for your viewing pleasure
No picture of "the Borg are everywhere" Riker?

Now that was a beard!

LOL! I only picked ones that were his "official look", otherwise I might have nominated this one:

Interesting. I actually think that by the time of Insurrection the lack of a beard wasn't a problem anymore. Frakes in 1987 just looked kind of young and goofy without his beard, but in 1999 his looks had matured enough that I think he actually looks suitably cool even without it. Maybe his extra 'puppy fat' was working to his advantage in 1999 after all? ;)

It could also be that his beard was turning grey and it just didn't look the same:

I'm definitely of the view that Frakes might be one of those guys who didn't look right without a beard when he was younger, but who as a ''mature age'' person would be able to carry the clean-shaven look with sophistication.

IMHO, Riker with a grey beard was worse that Riker with no beard. Riker with a beard was better... For a while. On balance, I found NakieFace Riker the most palatable, however...

Minuet.

With no beard.

Regardless of what you think of it aesthetically, the show got good approximately when he grew a beard, so I'd say it's a good thing he grew it.

I don't know if the filming dates match up with the TNG ones or not, but he had the beard in season two of North And South as well, after being clean shaven for the whole of the first season.

Clearly, growing beards in the second season of TV shows is what Frakesy does. :D ;)

It does. He showed up to film TNG Season 2 with the beard he'd grown for N&S. When he ran into Roddenberry he told him he'd shave it off before his scenes, but Roddenberry said he liked it and told him to keep it because it looked "nautical".

I liked the beard, but hated the hair pushed back. I thought it made Riker look older. He looked great in season 2.

I remember when Riker shaved off his beard in Insurrection, I just fixated on the bags under his eyes for the rest of the movie. Frakes had aged a fair amount in those 10 years.

I think the beard looked its best around season 3. The producers made him trim it back too much before season 2.

He's actually got a neck beard in ''The Child'' which is missing from the rest of season two (and, I think, the rest of TNG). In that one episode, it's noticably bigger and bushier than in later episodes.

Prior to ''growing the beard'', there are in fact several episodes of season one where his five o'clock shadow is more pronounced than others. Check the engineering scenes of ''The Naked Now'' for example, especially in HD, and you can already see the roots of the famous beard starting to come through quite strongly. ;)

I actually like his grey beard and glasses, it has a nice somewhat sophisticated feeling to it. The beard will always fit him and it concealed him from looking too baby face in the beginning of the show.
