Will you have the Swine Flu shot?

Will you be having the Swine Flu shot

Yeah, the GBS link is of some concern (although the current H1N1 vaccine is prepared differently from the true swine flu vaccines of old) but I admit my interest in ill effects is more of an academic one at this point. One bedside manner demerit for me, I guess.

We had the Secretary of State for Health and the Chief Medical Officer both filling the airwaves today, preaching to us health professionals to take up the swine flu jab as soon as possible.

When those two stooges agree on something, I know I'm right to wait this one out a little...
...and stock up on a supply of N95 face masks. I threw one out today after using it and got reprimanded for my insolence.

We got a stash of swine flu stuff delivered to our community base today - masks, gloves, other shit that none of us will ever bother using. Even the non-clinical admin staff realised the pointless expense of all this; one commented "we're just going to end up storing it for two years and then sticking it in the cellar". Yep...

Do masks make a difference? The reason I ask is because my niece is having a birthday party tomorrow at a local Chuck E. Cheese, and they were going to wear face masks to prevent the spread of flu.

Then you wind up with something like an abandoned Cold-War-era Civil Defense shelter.

Depends on the mask.

Well, I bought two face masks from a pharmacy, but they were expensive. So my mom suggests going to Autozone and buying a box of the painter's masks.

Might lead to some messy eating.... :D

Ooh, exciting. All we need now is the suitably paranoid government advertising. Oh no, wait, we already have that.

I think you two are looking for the BDSM sub-forum, sorry. :p

Yeah. I'm getting a daily play-by-play via email from the AMA. Yet another reason to cancel my membership.

As long as none of the hawt residents get sick with H1N1, I'm a happy man. ;)

I just got my H1N1 vaccination this afternoon at the oncologist office. Between that and the regular flu shot I got a month ago we've covered all the bases we can. I'll let you folks know how it goes.

I ended up not getting them anyway. 2 painter's masks at Autozone are $7. They didn't carry any other kind, so I'm guessing they wised up real quick to why most people were buying them.

CBS Reveals that Swine Flu Cases Seriously Overestimated

H1N1 tests overwhelmingly negative

In Florida, of 8,853 specimens, 83 percent tested negative for other flu while 17 percent were positive for H1n1 flu.

In California, of 13,704 specimens, 86 percent tested negative for flu, 2 percent positive for h1n1 flu and 12 percent positive for other flu.

In Georgia, of 3,117 specimens, 97 percent were negative for h1n1 flu and 2 percent positive for h1n1 flu.

In Alaska, of 722 specimens, 93 percent tested negative for flu, 5 percent positive for seasonal flu and 1 percent positive for h1n1 flu.

(These findings are dervived from a diagram by CBS and were not presented originally in Dr. Mercola's article. The diagram was deleted to avoid the copyright issue. Noted by foodconsumer.org editor)

I agree with the sneezing and coughing, but in general people do wash their hands pretty badly. :p

US swine flu 'national emergency'

US President Barack Obama has declared swine flu a national emergency.
The White House said the president signed the proclamation concerning the 2009 H1N1 outbreak on Friday evening.
It increases the ability of treatment facilities to handle a surge in H1N1 patients by allowing the implementation of emergency plans.
Last week US officials said swine flu activity was widespread in more than 40 states. More that 1,000 deaths have been linked to the virus.

Vaccine warning
US officials said the president's declaration was similar to ones issued before hurricanes make landfall.
It allows authorities to bypass certain federal requirements in order to deal more effectively with emergencies.
Last week, US officials warned there could be delays in the delivery of swine flu vaccines.
Anne Schuchat, of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said only 28-30 million doses would be available by the end of October, down from an earlier estimate of 40 million.

What exactly does it mean by "allowing the implementation of emergency plans".

What emergency plans?

Food for thought:

Meanwhile, swine flu is more widespread now than it's ever been, and has resulted in more than 1,000 U.S. deaths so far. Flu illnesses are as widespread now as they are at the winter peak of normal flu seasons, said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.

"Many millions" of Americans have had swine flu so far, according to an estimate he gave at a Friday press conference. The government doesn't test everyone to confirm swine flu so it doesn't have an exact count.

Frieden updated some other estimates, too, saying there have been more than 20,000 hospitalizations.

From your article:

The aim of the directive is to remove bureaucratic hurdles, allowing sick patients to receive treatment more quickly and giving health-care providers more flexibility in providing it.
Paperwork on patients can be reduced and additional health centres set up outside hospitals to care for the sick.

When I posted the article it only had two paragraphs, they have expanded it considerably since that time.

Thanks for letting me know.

Might have it, but I have to clear it with the family doc first. It'll have to be the mist-- which I might not be able to take-- seeing as I'm allergic to the injection style vaccine.

As for cost: Our insurance company is, supposedly, going to send out vouchers for free shots in the beginning of Nov. So if I do go that route, then it's just a matter of If I can take if, and if so if there's any available.

Well, now they're saying one of my other cousins might have it. Doctors confirmed my first two cousins (the little ones age 4 & 7), and now they think my 9 year old cousin has it. The crux of it is that they all play together and that's a sure fire way to spread something like that around. They're still testing on the girls' mom, to see if she has it, and she's pregnant so I hope not! :(
