* Is dead, Jim.
I think that a REAL reboot would have been a better choice. There is a certain irony that the one incarnation of Trek that was reviled by most fans, Enterprise, is now the only one that is still valid. How cruel is that.
The other problem with going this route is that they are also tethered to the outdated 20th/21st century in the Haroldverse. A clean break would mean that that history would be open and adjusted as necessary.
As a Trek fan though, one does have to wonder what happened during First Contact?
in my ideal world, we'd get 3 movies from abrahams, ending our star trek phase 2 (i'm calling it in my head, i know ur thinking the potential 2nd star trek series but i'm referring to abrahams new trek "alternate reality" as he called it)
star trek prime being the original trek we know, both based off ent, prime being TOS TNG DS9 VOY
phase 2 being ENT + abrahams
i relaly want to put them both together but cant
ANYWAY
will we see star trek prime ever again?
i'd love to see a trilogy from abrahams and them go back to prime, another series set 15 years after nemesis (or whatever real time has passed would be cool)
if done well, good writing, good stories, good cameos (not just cheap corny ones)
anyway, i JUST saw the movie and...

I am sorry you didn't get as much excitement out of the movie as I did.Sadly, I think that the original timeline is gone and never to be seen again, which seems to have been the clear intent of JJ et al. I personally found the movie to be a disappointment. I felt like they were thumbing their noses at the fans, in essence saying that "your Star Trek is dead." The pitch to adolescents was so strong it made me wonder what I was doing there at times. I am a lifelong fan of all the TV series, and I did not feel that I was the target audience. Somewhere between the motorcycles, muscle cars, Budweiser and Nokia ads, and profanity I began to feel alienated from the movie. I walked out of the film just scratching my head, and am still unsure of what to make of it all.

That's funny, because I distinctly remember watching them. From now on, the first ten movies never happened.

However, I do have one nitpick: I don't think TOS' target audience was 40+. Most people who grew up with TOS are at least that age now, it's been a few decades, after all. So it's only expected to feel a little bit alienated if you grew up with TOS; the new movie targets the same audience TOS did: 16-30, the viewer's age is the only thing that differs.
Give it time. Once a few movies are out and they'll feel comfortable starting a series, I'm sure the depth of stories will increase.I hear you, and you make a good point. Still, nobody will say that this new Star Trek is "too cerebral," and that is something I missed.
I agree, which is why the movie should have been a real reboot. Now they're stuck with all kinds of garbage from the old series and movies.Honestly, I'm SICK TO DEATH of that universe. It gave us some good shows and 2 EXRUCIATINGLY shitty ones. Not to mention that every odd movie was generally garbage anyway. They simply ran out of ideas because the universe was being strangled by the bloated carcass of it's canon that was perpetuated by its obsessive compulsive fans.
We've already gone to the past (i.e. ST: ENT) and the ball was dropped. Go too far into the future and and the stories would be too disconnected from humanity. I.e. I'm guessing humans, 1000 years in the future will be nothing like us today (socially, physically, philosophically) and as an audience it would be difficult, if not impossible to relate to it. Not to mention a whole new slew of ridiculous technobabble that would accompany it.
No, this reboot was truly the only option. JJ Abrams is certainly not infallible; however, he has amazing vision and he takes risks. He took a gamble here and it paid off in spades. I have ZERO hesitation in handing this man the reigns to finally begin telling stories that are not suffocated by cannonical slavery!
Being a fan of ST since I was a kid, now at the age of 27, it had lost its magic; Star Trek was boring. I now see a reborn franchise that is robust and takes us away from the cheeseball dialogue about flux capacitors.
Star Trek prime? Who gives a shit?
