Will this series be more adult than the other ones?

There's been too much "science fantasy" for my taste in Star Trek. I'd like it if they'd consult real scientists and try to depict a believable future. TOS consulted with the RAND corporation back in the day...One thing I like about The Expanse is that there is a lot of Science in their Fiction.
And promptly ignored anything that got in the way of the story. Star Trek isn't hard science fiction and probably never will or shouldn't be.

What does it mean to be more adult?
Will the show pay taxes and raise children?
Or is this that weird thing where TV shows act more immature with extra violence, cynicism and nudity but people confuse that for being adult?

Star Trek has always been for adults. It's actually been for everybody. That's a good thing, not bad.

I'm expecting it to be on the level of stuff we see on basic cable channels like FX and Syfy. Since this is part of established franchise that kept itself at a fairly PG level over the years, I can't see them going to full on HBO/Starz levels of sex, nudity, and violence. So some harsher swearing, a bit more explict sex, and maybe an ass or two, but not full frontal nudity or fucks.

Not a single fuck given? :(

;)

I do find it amusing that dozens of posts have immediately decided to interpret a series being more adult as there basically being "more fucking".

I mean, is that the only metric of adult people have now?

Not necessarily, it could also mean that the main characters are saddled with debt and disappointment. :)

All Star Trek shows were adult entertainment. They were also all products of their time. Nudity, sex, swearing and death do not an adult show make.

Sure, but there are more than two options here. I think TOS and TNG did really well when they were given good advice, and found a way to intertwine a science concept into a story. I don't think anybody is sincerely saying Star Trek needs to be "hard science."

I would prefer the show to utilize science and, in between space battles and all the action-adventure-drama, throwing in some cool science concepts.

Unfortunately, for some, it does seem to be the metric. It's the first, if not one of the first things people bring up to me whenever they mention Game of Thrones in conversation, for example. As a selling point for why I should watch it.

I'm not against Star Trek getting more colorful with the language now and again. Lord knows my family still get's a kick out of "double dumb ass on you." in regular conversation, but Star Trek generally never did do sleazy very well. It always came off really really bad when they tried to sex it up or get unnecessarily crass.

Or in any other way try to loosen up the characters and have them behave like people.

Predominately, because they never did it very naturally. It often felt like someone leaning around the corner and going "HEY! LOOK AT THIS THING WE'RE DOING!"

IIRC, they often worked backwards, find a bit of science that fit the plot, rather than building a plot around a particular concept. Science was often secondary in Trek. Its really about people and situations.

Oh, there are people who think Star Trek is hard SF.

It's had it's moments of testing the water there, in my view sometimes even getting it right.

TMP is the most obvious example, but episodes like "Home Soil" do also drift that way. Those instances still rely on metaphor and analogy to make the story mean more than simply "heroes with tech in danger", but they do it in ways that moves further from the expected norm of "humanoid alien as reflection of some aspect of humanity" trope.

For the most part, however, I agree with you. Star Trek is sci fi only in the very loosest sense and a great deal of the technobabble that leads to wondrous things happening could equally be magical incantations without detracting from the point.

All Star Trek shows were adult entertainment.
In the past, I believe it was more "family entertainment."

There actually were few moments that stepped outside of that description, blowing up Remick's head being one.

Yeah, Trek in the past generally was meant for all-ages and leaning to family entertainment/appropriate for children. The new one will probably mostly be that (as CBS will want it to try to get mass appeal despite knowing that it is/probably will be pretty niche) but try to be a bit edgier.
