    That's one possibility.

The other is that I am apparently very difficult to buy for and so copies of Star Wars are considered easy fodder ;)

    *mutters* Stupid gift exchanges ;)

I think it would be more likely JJ would replace the prequels with another copy of the originals. Possibly untampered with!

    No.

To make TOS palatable to modern audiences you have to update the look, the backstories, the style, the narrative, the pacing, everything.

I think he is referring to the Star Wars trilogies not TOS.

Given what subforum we are in, I can understand the confusion ;)

I'm talking about untampered version of the original trilogy. ;)

I have the Laserdisc (Original Trilogy) Widescreen Collector's Edition Definitive Collection. Includes perfect box, perfect chapter guide booklet, and untouched "The Creative Impulse" book.

The reason I haven't bought SW on DVD yet.

By the time the version I remember from my childhood is available, DVD will probably be long extinct. :(

I have the DVD's which came with both the Special Edition and Original release versions of Star Wars that were sold several years ago.

Ultimately, I still prefer the Special Editions, despite their supposed hiccups. I'm not overly concerned about the whole "Han Shot First" mantra. The only thing that irked me about that scene is that clearly, Greedo's emitter on his blaster pistol was waaayyyy out of adjustment.

What I found more irksome than that was in The Empire Strikes Back, when James Earl Jones' "Bring my shuttle!" was replaced by some piss poor imitator's voice saying: "Alert my star destroyer to prepare for my arrival!" That was far more unnecessary.

Gah, just when I thought I had got out of TV Tropes they pull me back in!

The examples aren't great, as they seem to think that using anything from canon automatically causes continuity lockout.
In First Contact there is a bunch of unspoken backstory to do with the emotion chip. But for a first time viewer, this is completely unimportant. The movie sets up: Data is a robot, he's been thinking about installing an emotion chip, he installs the chip, he gets emotions. Unless you genuinely don't understand the concept of "robot", I don't see how you could be confused by this, or feel you've missed something important.
