Will the SG-1 series be released on Blu-Ray?

Or are there technical reasons that are holding it up, like for ST:TNG, DS9 and Voyager?

Atlantis maybe, but SG-1 wasn't shot with HD in mind until season eight. They could release it on Blu-Ray but it might not look much better than an upscaled DVD.

They are, however, preparing a special edition version of "Children of the Gods" with new special effects, a new edit (which removes a certain less than family friendly scene) and new music. I suppose they may release that on Blu-Ray.

Atlantis, on the other hand, has been shot for HD since the start. There's no reason why there couldn't be a Blu-Ray release save for the odd stock shot that's from a SD source, but they did that in Continuum too.

Yes but if SG1 was shot on Film(35mm) it shouldnt be too hard to downgrade it to HD. Im not 100% sure if they shot on real true film. But if they did....Most people dont realize that Movies in theatres are much higher resolution than even HD. Thats why to me SG AOT looks just as good if not better than continuum. And AOT was shot on film and continuum was made for HD/Blueray...

The early seasons were shot on 16mm. Even when they switched to 35mm they still rendered the special effects shots for standard definition TV. There's a lot of work to be done before it's possible to release the show on Blu-Ray.

Even 16mm has more resolution than HD, but you're probably right about the special effects shots. I'm sure, like Babylon 5, they were only rendered for 480p (until season 8). But at least they were rendered in widescreen. Moreover, the models still exist, so re-rendering them won't be as huge a hurdle. Stargate will find its way to Blu-Ray, no doubt about it.

^Yeah, but as I said, it's not going to look a hell of a lot better than an upscaled DVD in places. Take the stock shots of Cheyenne Mountain in Continuum for instance.

^^
How did those look on Blu-Ray (or are you referring to them looking bad here)? I know they went back and shot a number of new shots at Cheyenne Mountain during season 8 (IIRC), so they could always plug those in, couldn't they?

"Children of the Gods" plus seasons 1-3 were originally shot on 16 mm, and post production (editing, effects) was done on digital video at 480i. The producers are going back to the 16 mm dailies of COTG and starting over from there. Brad Wright has mentioned in interviews that the special edition of COTG could be released on Blu-ray. At least the producers had the foresight to shoot everything 16:9!

This is the same process that would have to happen for say The X-Files, TNG, DS9, VGR, B5 etc to be released in HD. TNG was one of the first shows to be edited on video as a cost saving measure. Ironically anything before the mid-80s (not shot on video anyway, which impacts a lot of series like Doctor Who) was posted on film and can be released just as easily on Blu-ray or aired in HD as a theatrical film.

Seasons 4-7 of SG-1 were shot on 35 mm (plus "Nemesis" and save "Entity," which was shot in HD as an experiment at the end of season 4).

All of Atlantis and seasons 8-10 were shot and edited in HD (same as ENT season 4). Not shooting on film can save the average series $1 million a year in costs.

I thought ENT was shot and edited in HD from the start. It switched to digital cameras in season 4, but it was shot on film with all the CGI and editing done at HD resolutions from Broken Bow.

Yes, it was. Until they lost the rights, Enterprise was regularly shown in HD on Sky One HD here in the UK.

Emphasis mine there. ENT was shot on film in seasons 1-3. Film which is of higher quality than the nicest of high definition. So, it was edited in HD, but only shot on HD in season four (as a cost cutting measure, IIRC).

ummm, thier useing the REMOVAL of one of TV's best nude scenes as a selling point? (pumps shotgun)

^They're a family show now. Showtime practically forced that scene on them in the first place and they have no obligation to them anymore.

The show could've used some more nudity. I'll take full frontal over kiddie show sensibilities any day.
