Will "The Phantom Menace 3D" bomb?

Imagine if they released a thoroughly recut version, with stuff like "There was no father", all the "midichlorians" bullshit and such completely removed. A 20 minute shorter, and a 20% better film (or less shittier, depends on how you look at it).
 
Is this like an understated threat that if you don't see the PT in 3D you're not getting the OT? Why not just do the OT?

I think that that's exactly what it is. Only it's not really understated - McCallum said exactly that, albeit in less confrontational language. But that's what's going on here, absolutely.

I think we gotta remember how personally invested George is in the PT. He did things his way, with no actorly Ford to give him guff, few to no tough location shoots apart from TPM, no directors or writers with conflicting visions - and he filled it with stuff that interests him: car races, 50s diners, ham-fisted political allegories, etc. He is the PT, through and through, so to distance himself from it would be to forsake his own nature. Or something.

So yeah, he's gonna continue shoving the PT down our throats, and if the 3D PT bombs, he could easily weasel out of the OT conversions.
 
It seems to me that the 3D releases won't need to make a lot to be profitable. They really only need to cover the costs of the the 3D conversion and the marketing. Yeah, this will make a ton o' money for Lucas.

Apparently efforts to convert the original trilogy are proving to be more time-consuming (hence, more expensive) than expected, which makes sense, given the filmmaking techniques of 1977 - '83. Since the soonest we'd be seeing Episode IV is 2015, if Episode I under-performs, Lucas won't necessarily need to spend the money to keep doing the rest of the movies.

Imagine if they also removed biologically inherited Force sensitivity from the OT, where it originated in the first place.

I'll see it in theaters provided I can stomach the 3-D. I get motion sickness so I've no idea how I'll react as I've never seen a 3-D film before.

I've seen a fan edit of AOTC that was quite good. It actually made the Battle of Geonosis have some sort of structure instead of something out of a epileptic video game not to mention getting rid of lots of the shitty romance.
 
TPM has not aged well and despite not hating it when it first came out nor disliking the PT, the 1999 movie is my least favourite of the franchise despite the bad ass sabre battle + music score. It doesn't really matter anyway because I would NEVER pay a 3-D ticket price to see a film I have already seen countless times and 3-D sucks, only James Cameron has used it well to date.
 
I have little interest in seeing any of the prequels again -- even The Phantom Menace, which is probably the best of the three films, sadly. I have even less interest in seeing a 3-D conversion of a 2-D movie.

Yeah, not going to see this one. I'll probably skip the OT, too, unless the 3-D conversions are quite well reviewed.

It's going to be a big success, though. Live-action Star Wars seems to be critic proof.

Actually I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the PT was the more challenging one to convert, just because there so much extra shit constantly flying around on screen and in the background of every shot.

In any case, it's a shame we probably won't get to see the OT in 3D. While I generally try to avoid converted movies, I have to admit it WOULD be pretty cool to see what those ones would look like in 3D.
 
So are we going to see "Greedo shoots first" in 3D now? Doesn't that just add insult to injury? Like rubbing it in our faces? :lol:

But the only way I'd care about the Prequels in 3D was if they actually re-render the stuff in 3D, and not just convert it to 3D.
