Will the Patrick Stewart and new shows hurt "Discovery?"

Once this became news and the closer to reality of Stewart signing on, am I the only one who feels that everything about "Discovery" has basically moved to the back of people's thoughts? The new stuff seems to be what is generating the most interest now. I can only wonder what will happen when we start getting even more details. "Discovery" has a really good chance of being DS9ed where it ended up being overshadowed by a new Trek way to soon before it had been able to establish something on it's own.

The "I Love the '90s!" Crowd will be more excited about Patrick Stewart. I'm still more interested in and excited about Discovery. New TNG is more like a curiosity to me than anything else.

Since DS9 is my favorite Trek series of the Berman Era, I'll consider DSC to be in great company. DSC is the DS9 of today.

I don't think it'll hurt it. There will definitely be a lot of buzz if/when this is announced and when it premieres, but I assume CBS is going to have the different projects on at different times (and not overlap them much or at all), so they'll all get attention.

Discovery will be on to season 3 before we get any other new Trek.

I think it depends on if you buy into the whole burnout thing people say about Marvel and Star Wars. If the new PS show is a six episode miniseries or something especially then there is no reason it can't pick up one a season of STD ends sort of like the Marvel netflix stuff does. In fact it might even help it by keeping interest for trek burning through the years. Of course if you buy into this whole burnout thing then it doesn't matter that one stars PS as five shows will be too much and the whole thing will explode killing Trek FOREVER!!!!!

Currently in my highly scientific poll, Discovery season 2 is in third place behind joint firsts Star Trek 4 and Picard/Next Gen Reunion Show.

I only hope Discovery and the other series' remain unique. I don't want generic episodes that could just as easily be Disco, or Pike/Spock, Orville or Next Gen reunion. They all need unique identities or they deserve to be lost in the shuffle.

I agree with your assessment. I believe CBSAA is developing the added content to keep Trek fans from un-subscribing from their service during the time when something Trek is not being shown first run. I know I dropped their service the week after Discoveries finale was put up on their service. The need more new content to keep subscribers and this will be an attempt to plug the voids and keep subscriber dollars flowing. There's plenty of vacant weeks to fill, so there will be little to no overlap.

there are most likely a lot of viewers for whom DSC is their first new Trek show. a TNG reunion show might work for them but it will have to appeal on its own merits. the shows might have a complimentary affect on each other.

There are a lot of people I know who would be interested in seeing DSC but not interested enough that they'd bother to subscribe to CBSAA. Patrick Stewart might be enough to get some of them to finally do it...

... which in turn means some will take advantage of that opportunity to look at DSC. So, even if Picard "eclipses" DSC, it'll still draw more eyeballs to Discovery than before. Some of them (crazy thought ahead) might even like it (I know, right?) and think, "Maybe I should've subscribed sooner!"

No one knows, but it seems likely. At least if the shows go on the air in the next year or two. If it's going to be 3-4 years, who knows if CBSAA is even going to be a thing then.

If they keep the premise of each project limited (no more than 10-15 episodes per season or run) and different enough from DSC...I don't see a problem at all.

If the grand total of Star Trek material reaches ~25-30 hours per year...that's basically the length of a single old-school television season. Certainly not susceptible to "burn out," especially given that each show would presumably be different and varied.

I think there's nothing but goodness here, assuming the quality is above average.

They have momentum, they just need to make sure the writers don't mock things up. Now that previous showrunners have been kicked out, here is hoping that Kurtzman knows what he is doing and brings in good new writers.

The foundation is definitely there. In Discovery's case...I felt every week that the show fit into the "the parts are greater than the sum of the whole" category. The cast, production values, music, chemistry, etc etc all helped (for me anyway) salvage some of the gaps in the story. It was entertaining in spite of itself. That's a REALLY positive sign, assuming someone feels that same way, because that means that if the writing improves and gets more cohesive...the possibilities for improvement are significant.

I am personally excited for all of it, especially if this new Picard show is some kind of character piece called 'Picard', or something like that.

I'm not worried about Discovery, it has me hooked regardless of what else comes our way.

It's been around for almost four years now so I doubt it's going away anytime soon. The first two-plus years they didn't even have original content and still had over a million subscribers.

It depends where the Picard show airs. If it is a CBS All Access thing, I actually think it'll help. Those that boycotted Discovery because they wanted a post-Nemesis show might actually now subscribe to CBS All Access to check out the Picard show. And since they have CBS All Access now, some might actually check out Discovery "just for the heck of it". I think it would have the potential to actually get more eyeballs on Discovery, assuming it's a CBS All Access product.

I think the same pretty much for all the other upcoming Star Trek projects. If they're going to be on CBS All Access, and the more diverse they are, the potental for more viewers is there.

Now, if the Picard Show goes to Showtime, and the animated show goes to Nickelodeon, maybe then it would hurt Discovery as it wouldn't generate new CBS All Access subscribers, eliminating the potential for more views.
