Kirk lost his son and his brother and his best friend.
Spock lost his life.
McCoy lost his father.
Picard was assimilated by the Borg.
Riker tragically lost his mother.
Worf lost both parents.
Geordi lost his mother.
Beverly lost her husband and Wesley lost his father.
Troi lost her father.
Sisko lost his wife and Jake lost his mother.
I could keep going but I have better things to do. But this concept that there is no trauma in Star Trek before 2017 is ridiculous. Actually dealing with the trauma is what the series is trying to do now as opposed to just saying, “Oh yeah, Picard lived a whole life in a few minutes but he’s perfectly fine the next episode!” Having characters deal with trauma in my opinion is far better than sweeping it under the rug. It gives a message to the audience, “Hey, you’re not alone. If Caleb can make the best of it, you can too.”
I don’t see an issue with that.
