Will movie herald creation of new generation of 'Neo-Trekkers'?

I myself am still wondering if the whole "Star Trek is now cool, so we'll get legions of new fans" is really going to work out. I mean, I sure hope it will, but I fear somehow that despite exciting trailers and massive marketing exposure, the name Star Trek alone will keep people away.

But then again, who knows? I joined this board during the excitement of the ENT premiere (yes, there was excitement back then! ;) ), so there might as well be new people here come May 8th...

What this movie REALLY needs to do is attract a new-generation of fans who also happen to be HOT LOOKING CHICS...

The funniest line from that CONAN OBRIEN show, when the talking dog interviews that pregnant lady waiting in line for the new Star Wars movie with a bunch of Star wars nerds? Is when he (the dog) notices she is pregnant and she tells him it will be a boy...to which the dog responds "Well, I hope he gets a good look at your vagina on the way out..its the last time that poor little nerd will ever see one"

You know, i don't think it is absolutely necessary for Trek XI to create new fans. I mean fans like ourselves.
That roam the internet and talk about on forums about Trek stuff all day.

What Trek XI needs to do is be a good, entertaining movie for everyone that also shows the good and admirable qualities of Trek we've known all these years. Along with action and splosions and all that.
It needs to show that Trek is not a tired, irrelevant franchise that can not produce a quality product.

If it does that and gets sequels, then new fans can come in gradually and over the course of 4 or 5 years.Or more.
It doesn't have to go from 25 million old Trek fans to 50 million overnight.

But attracting new HOT LOOKING CHICS would ensure that there will be TREK FANS in the future. Our very survival as a fanbase is at stake here. We are a dying breed. Just ask your self 'what would Jesus do'? He would throw us a bone!!! Meaning, more HOT LOOKING CHICS...

Hey, I'm all for more hot looking chicks in Trek fandom.

We can always make exceptions and let those in right from the start and gather the ugly dudes slowly and over the course of the next decade. :bolian:

"Neo-trekkies" eh?

The first thing that came to mind for me was that DS9 episode where the Alpha Jem'ha'dar thought they were so much cooler than the Ones from the Delta Quadrant.

I could see some people on this forum getting upset with the new fans and pining for "the days when star trek fans were better or purer and adhered to the proper canon. Now so many are a bunch of Abrams yuppies raised on Romulans with tattoos!!! The Horror!!!"

Agreed...I think, on opening day, all HOT LOOKING CHICS should get in free and be allowed to move to the head of the line. Cause you gotta know that every local news outlet will have a camera crew there to film the STAR TREK nerds who waited in line for three days..well...what if a bunch of HOT LOOKIN CHICS were at the head of that line?? It would be awsome AND more importantly; attract some new male fans, heterosexual type (yeah, we need to make sure we have at least a 50/50 balance there) and Star Trek will look hip....

Rob

People who never watched Trek before but become fans cos of this series. I mean I hope it does cos Star Trek rocks, but it'll be funny having all these newbies among us (especially given how divided the fanbase is already).

If this does happen, I insist that we refer to these people as 'Neo-Trekkers' - just to differentiate them from older fans.

Good Lord, no. We already have stupid and inaccurate divisions in fandom (e.g. the "old fans are purists against the new movie" crapola).

Newbie is relative. I could call you a newbie, I'm sure, because I've been watching Trek since before many people here were born.

The fans are fans are fans. Let's welcome them to the family.

If Paramount is smart they will hire strippers and models from all over the world to attend the various premieres. And pretend they are fans or simple people interested to see this thing called Star Trek.

The old bait and switch...dude, you and I are on the same page here..

You will excuse me, but that's one of the worst ideas ever.
I'll pass.

Now now..lets not be to quick to judge. There was an attempt to segment fans and that is why there are TREKKIES (me) and TREKKERS. So its not like this hasn't happened before..
Eh, that was less about "segmenting" fans and more about attempting to shed a nickname coined by those outside the hardcore Trek-fan group and replace it with a nickname which was A) self-selected and B) intended to be taken more seriously than the amusedly condescending term "Trekkies" was perceived by some to be. Whether it was successful is open to debate but I think that, if anything, the self-proclaimed "Trekkers" ended up being seen as even nerdier nerds than the "Trekkies" were supposed to have been.

But what do I know? "Star Trek fan" was always good enough for me -- it doesn't require a detailed explanation for those less well-versed in Trek lore than you or me -- and it should do just as well for describing any new people we happen to pick up as a result of this movie.

Any wanker who decides to call themselves a Trek fan just because they like this movie will be considered a poser by me. And I consider posers to be less than human.
Shouldn't that be "p0sers"? :p

Come on, mate, don't be such a harsh judge.
Give the nippers a chance. Take them under your wings, share your vast knowledge with them, be their mentor. They might turn out all right!

How about "Never going to happen". People are going to see STXI as cheap commercial garbage that it is.

Not long after the movie is released:
-- Some new fans will go on boards and post threads saying they discovered TOS and it's great. Other new fans will say XI was great, and wonder how anyone every could've ever watched schlock like TOS.

After more films:
-- They willl debate whether or not the new movies should even bother with the pretense of fitting in with the old canon.
-- They will divide over whether XI was better than XII, or whether the initially disappointing XIII gets better over time. They will lament there's a new actor announced to be playing Spock in XIV, but after movie shows, a vocal minority will insist he's the best Spock ever.
-- They'll almost all hate XV, written and directed by Chris Pine after Abrams moved on to do other projects. Pine will be blamed for killing Trek.
-- Some will say it's time for new blood to move Trek back to TV. Others will say it's time for Trek to take a rest.

Then, an announcement will come out of nowwhere that Current Wunderkind has been given the Trek franchise and wants to make a TNG movie. It will leak out that Chris Pine will play Kirk and is central to the story. Old fans of TNG will say no one other than Stewart could ever be Picard. New fans will say that's ridiculous. Things change.

It will all be part of the circle of fan life. A perpetual Thanksgiving family get-together, where everyone's welcome and watch your back.

Ummmmm...yeah. Strangely enough, it could go like that. But wouldn't Sylar be the first to demand to direct a movie, to lure him back after they kill him off in trek 2..ooop..trek 12?

Finally, the fleet will find Earth, and Cylons will agree to live in peace and harmony with Trekkies. All of this has happened before...
