Will movie herald creation of new generation of 'Neo-Trekkers'?

People who never watched Trek before but become fans cos of this series. I mean I hope it does cos Star Trek rocks, but it'll be funny having all these newbies among us (especially given how divided the fanbase is already).

If this does happen, I insist that we refer to these people as 'Neo-Trekkers' - just to differentiate them from older fans.

Well, the creation of a new generation of fans is very likely... There are enough Batman fans who started with Batman begins and not with the Detective Comics of 1939, there are enough Star Wars fans who started with the prequels and not with A New Hope in 1977 and there are even enough Star Trek fans who started with TNG or VOY and not with TOS in 1966... Why should it be any different this time? Fans are born each and every day.

However, your 'Neo-Trekkers' (probably compared to 'First Generation-Trekkers') caste system is downright stupid.

Hmmm...What was that name we gave to all those new Star Trek fans that came on board after 1987 because of TNG?

I remember now -- Star Trek fans.

Of course it'll grow the fanbase. I see no reason to try and label certain fans by the particular movie or series they came into the franchise with.

Exactly. There's no reason at all to give them another name. They'll be Star Trek fans just like us. :techman:

Well, there won't be much to be a new fan of, really. What, with ST:XI, maybe an XII and even remotely an XIII? It seriously doubt it will be successful to go beyond that. Certainly no TV series with this crew. If there ends up being some marketing pull, would the Sci-fi channel franchise try to run a series based on this alternate Star Trek version? I doubt it. And I think Paramount is done with Star Trek series episodes, after the demise of Enterprise.

So, there's not going to be enough material to delineate between fans of old and new Star Trek. And I suspect that the movie may rope in some new fans that will eventually decide to explore the "original" material after finding themselves wanting beyond what Abrams produces.

I dunno, man. Not much was going on with Transformers, GI Joe, or Batman before those franchises got rebooted. Maybe this film won't create tons of new fans, but it might get existing fans (like me) interested again.

I think about one season into voyager, I just stopped caring. The stories, the forehead aliens, the same old shit over and over. If Voyager had been destroyed one week, I would have shrugged my shoulders.

Again, I gave Enterprise a chance, but Enterprise didn't take any chances. Lame rehashes of old stories.

I give this new team a lot of credit for taking risks. They're dumping money into the franchise. Here I am on a Star Trek BBS wasting time posting because I care about Star Trek again, thanks to J.J. & co.

Anyhow, I guess I'm more of an optimist, but there are few brands with as much intrinsic value as Star Trek. I look at this new film as a rebranding as much as a reboot. Maybe this new brand will open up new avenues for CBS & Paramount to make money.

BTW, the "neo-trekker" nomenclature = mega dumb. the last thing you want to do is exclude people who want to be trekkies. the irony is a little too rich.

Yes. They will come. It is inevitable.
They will come boiling up from the craters and chasms, the twisted, malformed mutations spawned by radioactive poisons unleashed in the cinematic Eugenics Wars. Unstoppable, inhuman, craving the flesh of the weak. Snapping and snarling, an unstoppable horde of locust-like ravagers, intent on nothing but satisfying their every insatiable whim!

Oh the horroror! Fortunately, we good, unmutated, non-neofied fans will continue to safeguard what is left of Twentieth Century civilization, sequestered in our underground shelters. When the dust clears, we at Pax will be here to pick up the pieces and...

...oh hells. Crossed the damn streams again.
Still trying to get over that comic book with Questor as captain of the Enterprise...oh. buggers.

ne'ermind.

[joke. seriously. just joke.]:p

The fans created by this film and possible sequels will be among the target audience for a potential new TV series -- even if it features a different crew (which it certainly would) -- Just like the success of TWoK and TVH led directly to the creation of TNG.

Any wanker who decides to call themselves a Trek fan just because they like this movie will be considered a poser by me. And I consider posers to be less than human.

An equally important question is if this movie will help get rid of some of the anal, self-righteous and embarrassing existing fans of Trek.

I myself am still wondering if the whole "Star Trek is now cool, so we'll get legions of new fans" is really going to work out. I mean, I sure hope it will, but I fear somehow that despite exciting trailers and massive marketing exposure, the name Star Trek alone will keep people away.

But then again, who knows? I joined this board during the excitement of the ENT premiere (yes, there was excitement back then! ;) ), so there might as well be new people here come May 8th...

You will excuse me, but that's one of the worst ideas ever.
I'll pass.

Now now..lets not be to quick to judge. There was an attempt to segment fans and that is why there are TREKKIES (me) and TREKKERS. So its not like this hasn't happened before..

Rob

Just because it's happened before doesn't mean it has to happen again.

Personally, I think it is stupid to try and put labels to any possible new fans that will be created by the movie.
The only thing it will accomplish is to make some old fans think they are special, holders of some kind of higher truth.
And the stupid Neo-Trekkers can't possibly have valid opinions or know what they are talking about.

We need actions that unite and welcome people, not actions that will increase the already divided fandom.

Trek...It's serious business :lol::p
