Will I be healthier?

I'm starting a new thing I invented, heh, well, for me, its new, cause I hate vegetables and fruits.

Today, I bought Orange Juice with lots of pulp, 100% pure cranberry juice, and V8 Fusion (full serving of vegetables and fruits one). I am going to consume one 8oz glass of each every day in the morning.

Will I be healthier? What positive or negative affects might I expect? Will it even do anything?

It depends on what else you consume throughout the day since an eight ounce drink isn't much.

You're going to be taking in a lot of sugar, I can tell you that.

If you are only going to drink one of each I don't think that that will be equal to the five servings of fruit and vegetable that is recommended.

If you don't mind the taste of these drinks why do you hate vegetables and fruit?

If you shift your diet toward one richer in vegetables and fruits you will find your tastes will change. The less junk food the eat the less you crave it. The less greasy fatty food you consume the less appetizing it becomes, to the point where you may even find junk foods you used to enjoy unpalatable and fruits and veggies you used to dislike to be craveable. These juices are often highly processed and full of sugar, and may be more detrimental to your overall health than beneficial. I'd suggest trying a large variety of veggies and fruits prepared different ways, and just sucking it up and sticking with it until your tastes change. That's really the best way to improve your diet.

Depending on what vitamins and other nutrients are in them (and what you're already taking in), it'll probably have some effect. Maybe not one that you'd notice. A lot of those juices really aren't that good for you, or they provide a poor amount of nutrients for all the sugar and such you're taking in with it.

I'm allergic to a lot of fruits so it's an issue I struggle with. I tried the V8 Fusion thing but decided it wasn't really adding much to my diet and it was pretty nasty. I'd try searching to find fruits and veggies you can consume. They're not all made equal! Also you may find that you like different things depending on how they're prepared. I think cooked carrots are one of the nastiest foods ever but raw carrots can be delicious.

This was going to be my first comment. You definitely want to watch what sugar you take in. Fruit is great, but it can introduce a lot of sugar into your diet.

Mate veggies do not have to be boring. Let me teach you how to make a killer salad.

Get yourself one red capsicum / bell pepper. Turn your oven on 180C, let it warm up and chuck the pepper in. Roast it for 10-15 minutes, until it softens up and the skin goes black. When done peel the skin off, cut it into two and deseed it. Slice it into thin strips.

Slice up some cucumber, tomato, spanish/purple onions and cos lettuce. Mix them all together inside of a bowl along with the roasted capsicum.

Chuck in some deseeded olives (I like the black ones they are not too bitter) and some cubes of fetta cheese.

Now you make the dressing. Mix three parts olive oil to one part balsamic vinegar. The more expensive / higher quality oil you use, the better. Give them a good mix so they emulsify. Add some roughly chopped basil leaves, a decent pinch of salt, pepper, chilli flakes and crushed garlic. Mix it well, and then mix it through the salad so that every ingredient is covered in hot, salty garlicy goodness.

ENJOY

Yeah, sugar is exactly what popped in my head, too. I love the Low Sugar V8 Fusion, though, a lot better than the regular stuff.

I thought it was all gross but because of my allergies there was only one flavor I could try. I don't remember which one it was now.

Salads are great, but one can be even more creative when it comes to incorporating veggies. Do you like creamy white pasta sauce, brent? It's loaded with calories and fat and is generally horrible for you, but there's a great substitute:

Steam or boil a head or two of cauliflower. The key to making cauliflower is to cook it for much longer than you think you need to. People often dislike the more "fragrant" veggies because of the smell and gas they can cause. The trick is to cook out all the stink, if you cook it long enough, it'll start smelling good. Next, toss your cauliflower into a blender with a cup or two of low fat cottage cheese, some fresh parsley, salt, and pepper. The result is a surprisingly flavorful and creamy white sauce that gives you a few good serving of veggies and will cut the calories in a pasta dinner by at least half. It's also good on chicken.

I must give that a go. Any recipe that makes cauliflower taste good deserves a look in.

If red sauces are more your thing, try this one out. Roast, peel and deseed a red capsicum, as before. Chuck it into a food processor, along with a bit of olive oil, some salt, pepper and chilli powder. Blend it well, really well, until it is smooth and delicious. Spicy red capsicum puree, it goes really well with fish.

^Sounds delish. Just remember with cauliflower: overcook it. The same goes for brussels sprouts and any other stinky vegetable. If you cook the smell out it tastes much better. It also eliminates gassiness after dinner.

Scroll down to the Orange Juice. As much sugar in an 8oz glass as 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup. Calorie content is almost entirely sugar. In short, bad idea to drink 8 oz a go.

V8 Fusion has even more sugar than orange juice, but surprisingly not too bad on sodium compared to regular V8.

Good luck trying to knock down unadulterated cranberry juice, though it might keep the yeast infections from all that sugar you're consuming with the OJ and V8 at bay.

Hey maybe now after 29 years I'll finally be able to eat brussel sprouts! Awesome

Brent, those juices and things that you buy are crap. Utter rubbish. Manufactured chemical cocktails with unknown side effects, sugar and vitamins and minerals that your body has trouble absorbing. As far as I am concerned they are as healthful as McDonalds, or Coke. (there is nothing wrong with eating those for fun from time to time but they do not provide any nutrition whatsoever)

Make your own fkn juice. Squeeze some oranges and drink that instead. But you'd be better off just eating one orange, you'll get some fibery goodness from the tougher bits.

Eating an orange is like eating sunshine.

Another way to make vegetables is to stir fry them. Pick out your favourite veggies - spring onions, carrots, zucchini, capsicum, regular onions, beans, peas, corn, pumpkin, squash, sweet potato, lettuce are all good - slice them up to a small and consistant size, and chuck them in a wok with a bit of oil. Cook them on very high heat very quickly, then add some sauce. You can make one up with lime leaves, chillis, fish, oyster or soy sauces, tomato paste, palm sugar, whatever takes your fancy really. If the sauce is too runny you can thicken it with a bit of cornflour slurry.

If you really can't face veggies without meat then you can add some sliced sausage, salami, ham, bacon, beef, chicken, prawns or fish to that mix.

The key is to season it properly - the sauce is what makes the natural flavours of the vegetables stand out.

I suggest intaking fruits in the form of smoothies that you make yourself at home. It can be healthy and yummy.

I love fruit but I have issues with a lot of vegetables. It took several years of pouring salt on my steamed carrots to get them down, but now I am able to eat them plain with no problem. So you can train yourself to like something if you have to. But within the realm of possibility...I don't think I could ever eat the tops of broccoli, I feel sick just thinking about how wart-like they look. The stems are okay though.

Oh yeah, and I find that vegetables cooked in the Crockpot along with a pot roast or other meat product come out tasting much better and having a more agreeable texture.

Like everybody else said: sugar, sugar, sugar!

I love me some apple juice but I still have to drink it in moderation. The best thing for you to drink is water, period. Basically everything else is going to be loaded with sugar and possibly fat (such as milk.) You might think diet drinks are an alternative, but most of them contain aspartame which has some pretty nasty side effects.

I'm going to have to try Nick's salad recipe, that sounds pretty good. And what tsq said about cutting out greasy fast food is very true. I stopped eating fast food and most junk several months ago. I used to get chronic headaches, fatigue, and I just plain felt lousy a lot of the time. I cut out the junk, removed soda as a regular part of my diet, added fruits and veggies, and started working out. A few months in and I feel much, much better. I wake up with more energy and I almost never get headaches or random fatigue spells. And I don't really crave any of that junk anymore. I end up munching on carrots and apples and such.

Hmm, I can't agree.

No vegetable needs to be overcooked. In fact, one the worst things about school dinners was overcooked and mushy cauliflower, brussells sprouts, broccoli, etc. To my taste, they should be cooked enough to retain a bit of crunch. Especially the brussells sprouts.
