Will Gary Mitchell make an appearance?

Abrams would've been doing fans everywhere a service just to have Mitchell appear in the movie long enough to show that despite being one of Kirk's best friends, he had always thought it was James R. Kirk.

What if we just watch the movie and enjoy it for the story and not fret about the exclusion of a character that was used in one average episode and died, and was never ever to receive a mention again? ;)

Elizabeth Dehner said Spock and Mitchell had worked together for years.

And Kirk was said to have asked for Mitchell to be aboard his first command - almost sounding as if the request had not been granted.

It's quite possible that Spock and Mitchell would have had a long career together under Pike, while Kirk was on completely unrelated business elsewhere. Indeed, the entire Kirk/Mitchell friendship seems to be very much an on/off affair, as it is said to go back fifteen years yet Lieutenant Kirk could have taught Cadet Mitchell at most ten years prior to the events of the episode.

Perhaps these two keep running into each other at unexpected junctures, but don't exactly share a cabin?

Nobody is fretting (I think.) Since we have a whole year before the movie comes out, what exactly are we going to talk about? To avoid repetition, it doesn't hurt to speculate about different scenarios, otherwise things would get boring very quickly.

Now, is Kirk going to have a neat little disposal chute (for tossing phasers-on-overload) just outside his cabin or will they violate canon and ignore that essential ship feature?

Hey! Did you know Kirk's middle initial was R? It's CANON, on screen and everything. :D

Very simple explanation for that (as already explained.) My preferred choice is the one that is explained in "My Brother's Keeper" trilogy of Trek books. :techman:

I know it's credited to TAS, but in canonized material, is TWOK the first mention of "Tiberius" as JTK's middle name? Though in the extended bit (which confirmed Peter Preston as Scotty's nephew) they DID make a blatant reference to a "Tiberian Blood Worm" or some such beast!

Okay, I guess fretting isn't the right word. :) It's fine to speculate about it, although if an actor was going to be play him I bet we would have heard mention of it by now. Most we can probably hope for is a name drop.

Okay, I'm going to say it here, perhaps for the first time JAMES KIRK HAS BEEN RECAST.

And still, just saying. :)

I like the one in Q-Squared better.

i read q squared and dont remember it and never read the other.

i know mitchell isnt in it though considering he was supposed to have been kirks closest friend it would have been nice to have seen him.

really if the story is of someone trying to kill kirk and change history gary played a part in an earlier one where he was supposed to have saved jim.

Maybe Gary Mitchell will be one of the characters played by actors with cameo appearances. Like Paul McGillion. Maybe Paul McGillion is Gary Mitchell. Or he could be Finnegan.

I agree with this and would have said it, but then it struck me that Chris Pike was in only three episodes of TOS and was never mentioned again in any onscreen context, and he's in the movie, so at the end of the day, maybe it's not all that unreasonable a request...
