Will Gary Mitchell make an appearance?

NiteTrek

Captain
One thing I haven't heard anything about is Gary Mitchell. No rumors or casting info. I don't see how they can overlook him, he was Kirk's best friend after all.

So Pike will make an appearance and we know that McCoy and Chekov will also be in the movie, so naturally Mitchell who falls in between those time frames should also be there.

Any suggestions on who would play Mitchell?

This is a question I brought up almost a year ago, before casting began.

I always thought that Colin Farrell would be a good choice.

He's not in it.

I wonder how they are going to avoid him? At the very least, they should mention him.

They do not need to mention him, and they can avoid him.

Perhaps Mitchell didn't join the crew until a month or so before WNMHGB (just speculation on my part). If that is so, then he does not need to be in the parts of this film that take place in the months leading up to Kirk taking command (which I suspect is most of the film).

They don't even need to mention Mitchell in the "Cadet Kirk at the Academy" scenes, since Mitchell probably was not at the Academy the same time Kirk was a Cadet (remember, Kirk was already a Lieutenant and an instructor when Mitchell was a cadet).

I suppose the scenes in this film that places McCoy, Chekov and the rest of the "regular 7" on the ship at the same time possibly happens during the TOS era. in which case you would be right in saying they may skip over the entire WNMHGB/Mitchell era.

So the bottom line is they don't NEED to include Gary Mitchell to preserve continuity.

He doesn't look anything like Gary Lockwood as Mitchell, or even as Frank Poole.
I will boycott this film if Gary Lockwood isn't playing Frank Poole and he doesn't say:

"Open the pod bay doors, HAL"

...or did Dave Bowman say that? Oh well, it doesn't matter since this is a complete reboot anyway.

We're assuming a lot of time in the movie is spent during the Academy years, and we'll see a lot of Kirk there. May not be the case.

May not need to mention the WNMHGB period, either.

How do you "avoid" him? The same way so many episodic shows occasionally leave even a major character completely out of a story. If you have too, you can simply write around him, or you may find the story just didn't need him.

Could be, too, that Mitchell may go the way of Chuck in Happy Days, and become a non-person.

The fact of the matter is: if every character, every incident and every setting named by fans (in this forum, alone) as being Essential! for Inclusion in the Movie!! (for reasons X!, Y!, Z! & §!!OMG!) were actually included in the movie, even as no more than name-dropping, the film would have a running time somewhere in excess of seventeen hours and would require extensive sub-captioning to keep the less Trekkish in the audience from getting confused to the point of mental freeze-out.

Think of the people who would be maimed in stampedes for the restrooms during the quiet scenes!

Yeah -- but like I said in an earlier post, even if wo DO see Cadet Kirk go through the Academy we may not see Mitchell, since Kirk was already a Lieutenant when Cadet Mitchell presumedly first encountered Lt. Kirk as one of his instructors.

As you pointed out, we may need to see A LOT of Kirk's academy time (assuming we at least see Kirk's time as a cadet) to see Mitchell.
