Why weren't there more SGA/SG1 crossovers?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
so i was thinking about this late last night before i fell asleep. why didn't we get to see more crossovers between the two shows, especially when SG1 was over and SGA was the only show that remained? someone will correct me on this, but i'm almost certain that SGA was the only SG show during its fifth season?

anyway, i'm sure there were TONNES of interesting stories that could have been done involving SG1 enemies and the wraith. imagine seeing a Goul'd take over a wraith. it'd have the healing powers of a Goul'd symbiote augmenting the already hardy physique of a wraith. i haven't seen all the eps so i don't know if this was ever referenced on the show, but did they ever mention the threat a Goul'd infested wraith would pose? that could have been the next individual villain when the 'michael storyline' fizzled out, or even a continuation where he experiments on the Goul'd in one of his labs and joins with one, thereby making him even stronger.

what about the wraith learning about the kull warriors and using them as warriors in their army?

i dunno, i'm sure there are tonnes more intertwining stories that could have been devised?

SGA was the only SG show during its 4th and 5th season.

The producers probably wanted the show to stand on its own. In season 2, SGA did a soft-crossover in "Critical Mass" and featured a Goa'uld.

But why would the writers bring back the Goa'uld in SGA when they were done and over with. They already brought over the Replicators (with varying success), and you want them to bring over the other main antagonist from the previous series? This makes even less sense considering that by the time SG-1 ended, the Goa'uld were finished as any sort of threat.

As for the Kull warriors, why would the Wraith want them? Their force seems to be working fine for them. Regardless, how would the Wraith even get any of them? For one, the Wraith need to be aware of them. And two, if the Wraith did know of them and knew where to get some (ie. the Milky Way), then they would have no need for them in the first place since that will take them to the galaxy where Earth is (which is what the Wraith wanted to know in the first place).

In short, crossovers are cool, but if you rely on them too much, then whats the point of making a new series?

They did a crossover of sorts in Midway, when Teal'c and Ronon went on a Wraith killing spree.

I think they had just the right number of crossovers without it getting into fanwanky. Having characters come from Earth every few episodes or helping out would have diminished the fact that the Atlantis crew was so far away from home, and bringing back enemies would have just been rehash. The replicators were enough reuse for me, although I would have liked to have seen more of the evil Asgard.
We already got Carter for most of a season, Teal'c for an episode, The SG-1 crossover episode where they destroyed an Ori ship and a Wraith ship. That was enough crossover to keep this SG fan happy. :)

Re: Why weren't there more SGA/SG1/SGU crossovers?

i would like to add SGU in this crossover thread...but also add that i would have preferred to have those crossovers be in the form of flashbacks.

The SG personnel in SGU and especially SG-A were people (presumably) who have had experience on other SG teams. It would have better for me to see SG-1 characters/earth through that lens.

For SG-A, for example, they blew it with Lt. Ford. The way he dived into the Stargate with glee, made me think he had quite a bit of experience. It would hav eben nice for the 1st 1/2 of season 1 with him teaching Shepard how to lead an SG team.

For SG-U, instead of those ridiculous plots with the "stones" or the Lucian Alliance invasion, having flashbacks to previous events, and how it informs/creates problems for the SG-U team would have been interesting to me.

Do we know of ANY previous SG exprience with the soldiers of SG Universe???

They wanted to refrain from a crossover the first year since they wanted Atlantis to stand on its own, so instead we got various cameos (O'Neill, Daniel, Carter, on Atlantis, Weir and McKay on SG-1). Likewise on the second season of Atlantis, they refrained from crossovers since SG-1 had undergone serious cast changes and they wanted the new SG-1 cast to stand on their own. But there were still cameos, Landry and Carter. And really, Critical Mass is very much a crossover episode. It featured the Goa'uld, the NID, the Trust. But finally season 10 and season 3 are when they really began crossovers, with The Pegasus Project, as well as substantial guest roles for the characters on the opposite shows.

Even after SG-1 ended we had Teal'c and Daniel making guest appearances on Atlantis.

Yup, standing on it's own and not intermixing the two shows. Also contract stipulations and money play a major part of it as well. Not as easy as the average veiwer would think.

There were enough cameos of SG-1 cast in Atlantis throughout the run (Walter, General Landry, Dr. Lee all come to mind) to satisfy me. Too many full blown crossover shows wouldn't make a whole lot of sense since they're in two different galaxies fighting two different enemies.
The ones we had worked for me, but otherwise that would have been too much.

The McKay crossover to SGU didn't sit right with me. Woolsey was fine, but McKay seemed to go back to the old SG-1 version of McKay.
