Why wasn't there ever a ds9 movie?

The idea came from an article from this site:

http://www.trektoday.com/news/250207_01.shtml

In it, it talks about the failure of Nemesis, and mentions Insurrection briefly as well.

Nemesis seemed to me to be too... revenge - cliche. I was actually very curious to see it, especially because it involved the Romulans and the plot of the Romulan Empire being overthrown, only to be disappointed.

It was mainly about Picard's clone, and how angry he is. He's angry and he complains.

His anger seems really missplaced to begin with, should'nt he have been more angry at the Romulans? They are said to have mistreated him.

He has a super weapon and a super ship and is determined to destroy earth and the Federation. It's then a race against time as the Enterprise chases and tries to stop him.

It seemed too formula and unoriginal - and even at this point they still don't mention the Dominion war very much! lol. In fact, they step right over any of the DS9 crew and give Janeway a cameo appearence.

There were just two many subplots, technobabbles, and cliche characters in the film, at least in my opinion.

The energy could have been more well spent with a DS9 movie, especially since Insurrection failed.

DS9 wouldn't lend itself well to a movie. A film deserving of it would require much more knowledge of the show to enjoy it than does a TNG film, and so would be of much less appeal and not commercially viable.

To continue it as a TV series, on the other hand, would be perfect.

Or they could go with direct-to-video movies like Stargate SG-1 did with Ark of Truth and Continuum. (Talk about needing a firm basis in the series!) Of course, DTV means a far lower budget, so they can’t have the big splashy space battles like Nemesis and the latest film, which in turn means they’d actually have to invest some effort in the screenplay.

INS was bad because it was boring and full of plot holes. NEM was bad because it was mind-blowingly stupid and full of plot holes.

Plotholes have nothing to do with it. All Trek movies have plot holes. Some a lot more serious than others.

The best written trek series, with secondary characters who were greatly developed, not to mention the primary ones.

Did paramount have some kind of aversion to good writing? Would it not have been nice to see what happened after WYLB, although i've been getting into the relaunch novels which unlike most trek novels do not suck horribly (especially love a stitch in time, but then again i'm a garak-o-phile).

Really, I think if any incarnation of trek had the potential to get decent award nominations, it owuld be this one...oh well, no use dwelling on what might have been.

We can thank the Gods (or prophets) they didn't do a DS9 movie. It is the best because it begins and ends with a great story that has weight; meaning, it is too good to continue.

DS9, like vintage wine, gets better with age.

I would agree if it were not for that godawful finale and minor S6 story arc about the Dominion and the Cardassians occupying the station.

No show is perfect.

I did like the 'flash back scene' of the finale, and thought, as an episode, and as a finale, it was far better than any, and I mean any, of the other modern treks in terms of finales.

The Dominion occupation arc? The show's high-water mark? :wtf: The six episodes which contain four of the best which the series had to offer (A Time to Stand, Rocks and Shoals, Favour the Bold and Sacrifice of Angels)?

I agree 100%. Look what happened with TNG - they had a perfect, feature-length finale (AGT) and they messed that up with craptastic movies. At least DS9 went out on a high note. As much as I love the show, it didn't overstay its welcome (*COUGH* Movie-era TNG *COUGH*).

Agreed. "Why was there a 'lightning storm in space' near Vulcan, since that was the effect when the Narada came into our time, and that obviously wasn't happening again?" isn't nearly as bad as the broken-ness of the Scimitar, pretty much the entire character of Shinzon, etc. in my opinion.

I asked Rick Berman at a con sometime around 2000-2001. He said there wasn't enough interest in DS9.

Since Rick is involved so much in Star Trek, he would know better than any of us to be fair.

Still, if there was interest in T.N.G and little interest in DS9, the last two movies still didn't work...

For that read, "I have no interest in DS9". I really don't see why O'Brien couldn't have been in Nemesis.

Well it's been ten years since the last ever DS9 episode was broadcast...June 2nd 1999. Would a DS9 movie be welcomed now, revisiting all the characters?

Any plot bringing all the DS9 characters together again 10 years later would have to be extremely contrived. Given the limited target audience, it would also have to be extremely low budget. I say forget it. The time for that has long passed.

The only plot line I can imagine where they need to bring everyone back together is by revisiting something important that was shown in the original series that was never tied up.

I dunno, I guess I'm just pining for more DS9 now I'm nearly done watching every episode on DVD.
