Why was there a backstory on Jennifer, Sisko's first wife?

Well I guess the only back story was that she died leaving Sisko a widower and a single parent. Having her appear in flashbacks would have to have some relevence to the plot(s) of the individual episodes.

I'm a little glad they didn't. I doubt it would have accomplished much except to give a little color to what we already imagined their relationship to be like. And given 'parallel memory stories that inform the current story' wasn't a big thing until Lost it probably would have been another crutchy 'Weird space disease traps you in dreams' episode.

In a way perhaps it kept her as an idealised image of love and home and comfort for us, probably as Ben and Jake would remember her. Probably that's not what the writers meant to do - I'm guessing they never came up with a good enough story to tell and it just wasn't interesting to them - but I think the effect is one of idealisation, memory, loss, a sense of stability and warmth that was unrecoverable to Ben or Jake and therefore not something that could be revisited at this point in their lives.

Having said that I did feel the Mirror Universe did a decent job of playing around with the issue of the lingering feelings towards Jeninfer.

Wasn't there some Prophet flashback in the later seasons, when Ben met her on the beach? He stepped on her towel when the sand was too hot?
