why was ensign kim not promoted at all in 7 years?

Something everyone forgets about, chekov held the rank of ensign for several years before getting his first promotion.
Two years in TOS. Absent from TAS. Shows up in TMP as a Lieutenant. His next two promotions must have come somewhat quicker, considering it's ~15 years between "Space Seed" and TWoK.

Ans noncanon that he switched from navigation to security.

That's a different command track.

here's the really weird thing.

His birthday moved 5 years because of the new timeline movie continuity.

His parents may have used the same name, but genetically, that's a completely different person, a sibling to the guy from the TV show.

Maybe they had a Pavel embryo frozen years before and there is no genetic difference, only defrosting time differences in the two timelines.

BS. He wasn't a navigator in TMP. That's what Ilia and Shatner's wife's character were doing. Chekov was the Security Officer; why else would it have been his responsibility to meet Spock's ship at the airlock?

The only way I can swallow Pavel being good at security is to think "Bester".
He was so creepycold as Bester... mind you, I never really appreciated the character until I read the trilogy of novels about Bester.

Light-years better than the silly alien Oro he played in a couple of episodes of "Starlost" - complete with a gold lame jumpsuit for a costume! :guffaw:

Those were great books, but the Passing of the Techno Mages trilogy were the greatest books ever. Bester was much richer character than Pavel.

That's nice. CANON!

And now I know.

I just remember some big deal being made during the hypothetical fourth season in some novels, about Chekov redefining is passions.

Glad I didn't read that one. Only thing more boring than the relationship crises in Treklit are the career crises. Though the frakking baby crises top all that by a mile.

I'm still waiting for the novel where the lizard babies grow up, start a Delta Quadrant Empire and try to destroy the Federation.

Dang deadbeat parents. :p

Lets be honest.

The kids would have been raised in an arboretum.

And when the Kazon took over the ship in Basics someone would have BBQed them.

On their freshly reclaimed ship..

Paris: What's that tasty smell in here?

Janeway, deeply relieved: It's the smell of Freedom Mr. Paris, that's all you need to know.
