Why the hate of the Ferengi Episodes?

Based on a Poll I made a few years ago on this board, most fans (over 70% IIRC) like the Ferengi episodes.

As for me, I love Quark, Rom, and Nog and most of the storylines based around them (except for the really stupid ones like Profit and Lace and The Emperor's New Cloak).

On the other hand, I can't stand Ishka - an inherently annoying character - or any of the storylines based around her, all of which did nothing except totally ruin the Ferengi race by making them identical to humans.

I actually really liked Ishka in "Family Business". The original actress has charisma and a lot of confidence--her voice sounded natural, and she was a real character. You could believe she could stand up to the whole of Ferengi society and survive unscathed.

The Ishka in "Ferengi Love Songs" on was a sorry parody of the orginal. The new actress sounded like she was mimiking someone (she used what sounded like a wierd spoof on a Sean-Connery-type burr, with a high-pitch--both of which the original Ishka didn't have). Furthermore--and I think we can more blame the writers for this--her character was just a bunch of simplistic stereotypes, with none of the complexity and charisma we saw in "Family Business".

I don't hate them. In fact they are some of my favorite episodes in all of Trek. It was a good departure away from the otherwise "seriousness" of the rest of the series. I do think however that in a certain sense they overdid it in that they did too many of them. For the most part though, I like them.

I love the Ferengi eps except for Profit and Lace which is the Threshold of DS9.

One of DS9's amazing qualities was how they fleshed out so many different species and cultures and they did an excellent job with the Ferengi. Very interesting species whose values clashing with the Federation made for some good drama, though the triumph of the Federation values in Rom at the end was pretty sickening.

Quark's action figures in his boyhood bedroom..

Ishka's plotting and behind the throne power over Zek..

Rom getting the girl and it's totally believable..

Nog and Jake fighting! that was a good ep

Quark, Quark, Quark.. longing after Jadzia, enjoying his role as a thorn in Odo's side, wheeling and dealing eps.

Seeing Ferenginar!

Jeffery Combs as Brunt!

Quark and Rom propping up the accidentally killed Vorta to trade him for Ishka.

I better stop, there are just TOO MANY great things about the Ferengi eps :)

I liked the "Bajoran" episodes as well - does that need a separate thread? "Why all the hate for the Bajoran episodes?"

The only DS9 episode I find unwatchable is the Brigadoon one with its poor depiction of Jadzia Dax. Awful. I'd rather have seen a clip show frankly.
