Why the Gold?

Here's a publicity photo (correction: now a still) of Nimoy & Kirk which shows how their uniforms (as well as Nimoy's makeup) were supposed to look like.

That's about as slightly green
As I have ever, ever seen
Anything be slightly green.
Too bad about that fabric sheen.
Slow day, eh?

Whatever the costumer's intent, if it looked yellow/gold on camera, I'd say that's what the color was in the fictitious setting.
Which is something that has never been argued. It was just some behind-the-scenes information that they were intended to be green, but turned out looking more gold in the end. I don't think anyone has said that they looked more green in the end (almost everyone still refers to it being gold/yellow for command).

I was wondering if anyone here has actually seen one of the command shirts used on set in real-life. Are they on display anywhere?

Yes, in the exhibit at the Detroit Science Center under what appeared to be white light. It was a season three polyester. It was not green. Nor gold. It was this weird Sixties color, greenish-gold, gold chartreuse.

It was almost olive, which can often look brown. Our GIs in WWII, who wore olive drab, were called "brown jobs" in Europe, b/c of their unis.

It's just this weird in-between color. But when Theiss had the opportunity to fashion the captain's tunic and the dress unis, he went with material/dye that was clearly green.

Try this, which is similar to the S3 repro shown above, which is about how I remember the real one I saw in the D:

It goes with the blue they used imo; but I'm surprised -- judging by the '60s greeting cards announcing my birth in that most glorious of years (Batman, Monkees, "Revolver" and Start Trek) -- that the red for services is a straight up red. I would expect a bit more carmine (http://www.colourlovers.com/color/E0706F/Carmine). But I'm glad we got what we got there.

Here's a random card with that blech Sixties palette: http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8295/7861434436_7a872202a9_o.jpg
