Why Star Trek?

When I was a little bitty kid TOS was on network TV. My Dad watched it so I did as well. But I think what grabbed me was at the time the whole space program was gearing up so I was interested in space and science.

But over the years after that in the pre cable days anything sci fi was few and far between. There were years where liking anything like that was uncool as oppossed to now where pretty much anything has some sort of sci fi element.

Yep... Trek has been there for me my whole life. No matter what was happening in life I could sink into a Trek episode.

I have always wondered why people get wrapped up in Star Trek

Because it's there.

The characters in these cool sci-fi shows usually had chemistry, the performance always drew me in to 'Trek and although there have been exceptions Star Trek I became attached to most of the characters throughout the series.

Considering there are no toilet seats in TNG, that's not saying much!

When I was five years old, my dad sat me down in front of the TV and said "here's a show I think you'll really like." And it just carried me a way to another place. A couple years later, Star Wars came out, and I was sold on sci-fi!

I grew up in the mid-90s, when Trek was having a heyday (with Generations, First Contact, DS9, and VOY all in production). My mum introduced me to it (she was a fan), and later wondered what she'd done! Because I was a Trek obsessive in high school.

It's one of those things that's always been there for me. My entire life. And I thank it for that. Besides, I always felt left out because I seemed to be the only guy who preferred Trek to Star Wars (I found Trek more interesting, varied, and intelligent).

A show about everybody getting along inspite of their differences? How can you not watch it?

Yeah, we had the whole Trek/Wars war thing at school. This was around '77 - '80 after the first Star Wars film had come out and spawned the action figures trend. A small group of us remained loyal to Trek, preferring the more intelligent approach whilst the others were bigging up Star Wars and the whole style-over-substance "Cowboys in Space" action of that (rather limited) film trilogy...
