Why so much negativity about the RTD?

What the end of "Random Shoes" where Eugene's soul or consciousness was ascending upwards?

I never saw that episode. But all the episodes where people brought back by the Resurrection Gauntlet and proclaimed, "Oh my God, there's nothing!" seemed to be pretty clear in their intent that there's no afterlife. Which fits in well with Torchwood's existentialist bent.

ETA:

Reading the synopsis on Wikipedia, it seems pretty clear that the Dogon Sixth Eye is responsible for the preservation of Eugene's consciousness after death. As such, I don't think that episode is clear evidence of the existence of an afterlife in the world according to Torchwood.

Having said that, I think we should also all bear in mind that Torchwood Series One and Two were really more the work of Chris Chibnall than RTD.

I'll admit it was RTD that was largely reponsible for drawing me into the franchise in the first place. Before he came along Doctor Who was commonly regarded as a joke, something to be laughed and sneered at.

Absolutely.

There's no good reason for the negativity, other than the existence of the Internet itself.

It's just some people complaining for the sake of complaining. Personally, I like RTD's approach to "Torchwood" in particular. I don't think anyone could deny how well written "Children Of Earth" was.

Yeah because nobody (especially including RTD, Moffat, Cornell etc) ever moaned about Doctor Who before the internet...the internet's made it easier, that's all, negativity has always been there, and I think "negativity" is bandied about too often on the net as some all emcompassing blob, when in fact there's quite a gulf between someone like me who has a lot of respect for some things RTD did/does, whilst having issues with some other elements, and those people for whom Russell is simply the anti-Christ

I don't think that's true. Chibs may have done some of the day-to-day stuff, but The Writer's Tale makes it clear that the overall vision of each series was Russell's, even if he didn't rewrite to the extent that he did on Who.
