why so little blue uniforms??

Cmdr Sho

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Why is it that you never see so many blues on tng, ds9, or voy? I think star trek needs more blues....

It might have something to do with blue (or green) screens which are used for special effects shots. A blue uniform becomes a problem because it blends into the background blue screen and when the special effects are added they will bleed over onto the uniform.

Edit: I see captcalhoun has already mentioned this in Why were there not more Blue and Green species thread.

Hmmmm.... That is resonable...but even then there are still not too many shots of them in the background.... What is that all about?

Well, if its a green screen issue, then it would count for all characters, background or not.

Otherwise... maybe the science/medical people are usually in the hospitals or labs, and just rarely seen, unlike Crusher, Jadzia etc.

I always wanted Data to be in blue. I'm pretty sure he was the science officer, right? I think he wore yellow because he was second in command.

^ He was the operations officer. I guess that's considered part of the security/engineering department, so that's why he wore gold.

I think Data was more of a Engineering Officer than a Science Officer.
I remember him being used in that capacity alot more often, even though
his Scientific abilities were just as apparent.

EDIT: Poster above hit it aswell, he was Opps.

I always wish Blue was the command color. Red always just seemed a bit
blah to me and you can't really have "Redshirts" without... redshirts.

Harry Kim was at Ops and he wore gold as well so indeed Ops would appear to be part of Engineering, which would make sense.

Blue is for all the science nerds running around in the bowels of the ship, not the key players in command. Who wants to watch science guys talk for an hour.........its a joke people, ahem.

Data was supposed to be in blue, but apparently the make up didn't look right with the uniform. so he ended up in gold.

i mean star trek is based on a lot of science, right? so why not have a blue explain in the shows a bit more? it would only make sense... I would just be happy with more scenes with blues in the background more... plus i think even 7 of 9 should have wore a blue uniform even though she was a crewman...

And Picard and Riker were also originally in Gold, but the producers thought they looked better in the crimson red.

Seven only wore a Starfleet uniform in "Relativity" when she time-travelled back to pre-Caretaker and infiltrated the ship undercover. her blue catsuit was not a uniform.

True, the catsuit is not a uniform, but she also wore a uniform in the season 7 episode "Human Error"... Now that I think of it... She did say that she did assimilate starfleet info, so she would indeed be a crewman.... I just wish that she wore a nomal scince uniform full time since she did do a lot of the scince stuff in voy....

"You'd cry too, if you were painted blue." - Puppy Patter, 1969 Mattell pull-string psychedelically painted stuffed dog (of which I would love to see a picture before I die)

ahhhhh....... mr lynch....... what does that have to do with star trek and blue uniforms.....

funny though and a good phsyc phase...

And there was absolutely no decent reason, in show, that she didn't. The Marquis rebels and Tom Paris the ex con all wore Starfleet uniforms, as did the holographic doctor. There wasn't a good reason really, given what she did on the ship (much more of a Starfleet role than Kes or Neelix ever performed) that she wasn't kitted out with Starfleet issue blues, especially later on.
The only excuse for continuing the catsuit past season 5 was maintaining the hard-ons of the teenage male audience.

The whole idea of gold being engineering is way off base. It was the color of "ship operations",..which of course engineering would be a part of. :vulcan:

FWIW, I still don't like the yellow/gold/mustard uniforms. On anyone. But I think it looks even worse on Data with his makeup. I think Data looked his best those few times he was in the red command uniform. And I can't imagine the blue would have looked bad. I know the red/yellow/blue thing was in keeping with the colors of TOS (albeit switching departments), but I really wish they'd found something better than the yellow...
