Why not turn Star Trek into pay per view?

ReadyAndWilling

Fleet Captain
hey guys, i was thinking about this during my daily morning exercise program.

i know everyone here wants to see another Trek series. of course, the problem is there's zero interest from any of the TV execs who want high ratings. nobody's keen to invest in a show if it's going to turn out like SGU or even, ENT. hell, i wouldn't. so i thought about it and came up with the idea of turning star trek into PPV.

i've been doing research and in his 10 fights or so, pacqiao has generated over a million PPV buys for every fight. PPV's are $50 for standard, and $60-65 for HD. a million buys at $50 a piece? you do the math. not many other many events can generate close to that, but many still generate well over 500,000 buys for events held once or twice a month.

i know, it sounds strange at first because everyone thinks of PPV as exclusively belonging to combat sports. people might even say 'it's just star trek' but i was watching a doco on youtube where people dress up and others were shelling out thousands of dollars for pieces of star trek like worf's pony tail. ST has perhaps the most devoted of all fans of any show in history. the cult following is honestly, astonishing. even for TOS, which went off the air 40 years ago. who still talks about 'friends' or 'caroline in the city'? those shows had huge ratings in the 90's.

surely people would be willing to pay $50 for one really crisp, and well thought out movie length episode once a month. imagine watching a 'way of the warrior' or 'first contact' show each month.

after checking wiki it appears DS9 only cost $66million for the WHOLE show, and that was the most expensive Trek of all time. one ST PPV event could easily cover half of that.

i'd love to be a part of a petition to get something started.

Re: Why not turn Star Trek if it was pay per view?

The economics of live sporting events and filmed entertainment are vastly different. No way it would work at $50 a pop... maybe $10.

Well, I think it would take more than a petition. I think that what would probably be wanted would be an up front donation of $50-$100 if anyone were to even think of doing this. For any studio to front the money for a PPV "event", they'd want a guarantee of hefty returns for their investment. And frankly, Star Trek isn't a fighting event. There is a lot more interest in dropping $50 on fighting than there is on a one off Trek event.

PPV for a franchise IMHO doesn't sound feasible. Paying a flat fee to watch any episode or movie per month would be nice; just like the deal CBS made with Netflix (best online content streaming company ever!) in April. Heck, it's even part of the press release that they announced their past catalog will be available.

Episodes from the original "Hawaii Five-0" are included in the package, as are episodes from all generations of the definitive sci-fi series, "Star Trek," and the cult favorite, "Twin Peaks." Installments of '60s classics, "The Twilight Zone" and "The Andy Griffith Show," will be available as well.

CBS has already experimented with this with Google Video (before they bought YouTube) and via iTunes but only à la carte.

$7.99 per month for US residents! :D Sadly, I don't know whether Canadian subscribers will have the same access with Netflix.

I'll wait and pay $9.99 for a DVD I can watch practically forever, and spend the left over $40.01 on 3 or 4 movie theater tickets.

Let's face it:

Nerds would rather pay for PPV porn.

Because we're all virgins who have no idea how to socially interact with the opposite sex. Sound like I'm about on track for where you're going with this next?

No. There's not enough sex and bad language for HBO or others to pick it up. Unless of course you want it to become a massive turd hovering over us like the Sword of Damocles.

First of all, there is no way that DS9 only cost 66 million dollars. Assuming a weekly budget of two million dollars (which is a low estimate) the total production cost of the series would have been closer to 400 million dollars over seven years.

A lot more sex and some occasional graphic language wouldn't do Star Trek a bit of harm, though - it'd make it a little less antiseptic.

I would rather not turn on TNG and see the following exchange. BE ADVISED: THE FOLLOWING CONTAINS LANGUAGE

Picard: All right, lets get this bitch done. Fire the torpedos Mr. Worf.

Worf: Fuck yeah, lets blow shit up.

Riker: Nah, I'm too busy banging anyone in a skirt. I'm totally going to tap Ro Laren some episode even though I totally hate that bitch. Hey Deanna, want to see if my beard matches your carpet, side by side comparison?

I rest my case.

I'd love to see Trek characters act and talk like real people. I dream of the day we get a Trek show with Firefly quality characters.

Well I reckon thats a mighty fine dream to have, but a man can dream until the cows come home and it won't help him one goram bit.

Still, don't hurt to wonder.

Actually, Netflix is a flat fee. $7.99 per month. I'm sure they would have a discount plan if you paid for a year in full.
