They want to move away from mostly anyone remotely having been involved with Trek. If you notice, there are hardly anyone working on this film that has had any involvement with a Trek project before. That includes behind the scenes staff as well. Which is kind of sad, I would have liked to have seen Mike Okuda working on this - putting in little references and in jokes in graphics and labels. I think they could have gotten away with at least using him.

Is that some "code word" for saying inappropriate words like "niggardly" in front of an African Americans is racially offensive, but saying "rice" as an adjective in front of Asian Americans isn't?

I used to love a time not too long ago when "racism" was taught in our society as being racially insensitive to the black man, but it was still okay to tell "fortune cookie jokes," "Heeeeeeeeyaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!," and "Ching, chong, chung, choong, chang..." when conversing about Asians and Asian Americans.
