Why No Trek Comedy?

Zachary Smith

Vice Admiral

There are comedy episodes in every "Trek" series. Any number of skits spoofing "Trek". "Trek" inspired "Galaxy Quest" was immensely successful. In fact, I submit that the TOS film "Star Trek--The Voyage Home" was basically a comedy film.

But there's never been a "Trek" inspired comedy SERIES. Not even any discussion of one so far as I know. I thank GOD we never had to endure the often rumored "Star Fleet Academy" series. But I think a comedy COULD work.

I see it more as a "MASH"-style show, rather than a "Happy Days" or "I Love Lucy" laugh-fest. The comedy rises from the characters and situations but the show has a foot in the real-world with real heart and consequences for what happens. A half-hour in length, it might be something that would shake up the VERY tired A-plot, B-Plot formula that had dogged "Trek" series since "TNG"

What do you think? Would you watch a "Trek" comedy?

I don't think I'd get into a Star Trek comedy.... It would still have to be a little bit more serious than MASH. However, i would like a more comedy-oriented take. It's always paid off in the past.

Then again, those work because of the nature of the show, which is generally dramatic with bouts of Silliness. I think my favorite Episode of Deep Space Nine was "His Way", but the reason that light hearted episode worked as well as it did was because the show was as Dark as it was.

Star Trek as a pure comedy series is nothing I would really want to see. I enjoyed the franchises occasional foray into the genre, but making it an all out comedy show would counter everything that Star Trek originally was. In my humble opinion, that is. :)

I enjoy some of the comedy episodes and I certainly liked Star Trek IV, but what I mainly like in Trek is the drama, the characters, and the stories. A Trek show where there'd be next to no chance of having an "In the Pale Moonlight", an "I, Borg" or that sort truly great ep would kill any interest in the show for me.

Believe it or not, Majel Barrett often dropped hints for a Mrs Troi sitcom, where Ambassador Lwaxana would be posted to Earth, and visited regularly by daughter, Deanna, and her beau, Mr Woof.

Majel studied comedy with Lucille Ball before ST came along, and was keen to do more.

I don't think I would want to see a Star Trek comedy. It would too much be like taking the mickey.
TOS is funny enough just as it is.

I'd rather have a Star Trek series with occasional comedic episodes, but not as an actual comedy series. I thought Star Trek XI was a good example of injecting more humor into Star Trek, but still keeping it as an action-adventure/drama.

Honestly, I doubt it.

I like a balance in my Star Trek, and too much on one end of the spectrum would likely turn me off in the long run.

I think a comedy-ish trek series could work if it was done in a style similar to Stargate
SG-1. The good seasons at least. To make a full comedy though would fall flat on its face

There would still be a chance during the occasional "A Very Special" episode. Worked out great for Facts of Life, Different Strokes, etc.

To be honest, after seeing DS9's "Once More Unto the Breech" and "Soldiers of the Empire", I've constantly longed for a full on Star Trek drama series based aboard a Klingon ship.
