Why no Star Trek Discovery references on The Big Bang Theory?

I dunno, they've made Babylon Five jokes!

Heck, they did an entire episode about Alphas being cancelled. :)

And this week's ep had a guest-spot by Neil Gaiman, complete with jokes about Sandman and 1602. Plus, a discussion of Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern.

Pretty geeky to me.

MInd you, the one thing that's conspicuously missing on BBT is any reference to written SF and fantasy. The guys are obsessed with movies and TV and comics, but I can't remember any of them ever enthusing about, say, the latest Cory Doctorow novel or whatever. Unless it was made into a movie like HARRY POTTER or THE MARTIAN.

Greg, do they do any Bab 5 tie in novels?

Yep. I wasn't involved with them, but there were several back in the day.

As for BBT: With the understanding that the show is under no obligation to present an accurate and/or flattering portrayal of geek culture, the show's big flaw has been the general absence of any female fans (aside from the occasional guest-character). Obsessing over sci-fi has been depicted as a guy thing, with Penny, Bernadette, and Amy all rather bemused by it all.

I'm hoping this new character, Denise, sticks around to remedy that.

Babylon Five wasn't mainstream, but it like NuBSG and Farscape was considered great within its niche. Whereas even most people who like Discovery wouldn't rank it higher than 'Good'.

The problem with BBT is more pat predictable cliche humor and characters based on easy stereotypes. 90% of shows that have a laugh track have it because they're not funny enough to get you to laugh without priming you to.

Good would be generous ranking for B5 it never approached "great" even in its niche. DISCO, yeah I give it a good.

Maybe it finally got through to the showrunners that TBBT as a "nerdy" show needed to actually be nerdy. If so, that's a good thing because the first three or four seasons were at best, "nerd light".

Now, if you tell me they've finally gotten rid of the obvious and shallow jokes, I might be willing to give it another shot.

I don't recall the early seasons being "nerd light". There was a what I thought was a nerd light season or two in the middle of the run, though. The relationship stuff was eclipsing the nerd geek stuff.
If the obvious and shallow jokes are funny I don't actually care.

To be fair, we ought to remember that this show is intended for general audiences, so the goal is not to come up with jokes so obscure that only hardcore nerds will get them. They don't get bonus points for jokes that fly over the heads of most of the audience. Coming up with nerdy jokes and references that the average viewer will get is not a bug, it's a feature. They're not trying to make make some cult thing that only a niche crowd will appreciate.

I'm just happy if the sci-fi references are on-target. I don't need them to be obscure.
