Why is the series being filmed in Toronto and not LA like the other series were?

Money. Its very expensive to film in L.A. This is why you see more shoots in Atlanta and Canada.

Because the dark and cloudy skies of Toronto fit much better with the dark and cloudy nature of the show then the bright and cheerful skies of LA.

That maybe part of the equation, but there are other factors. Hollywood is booked out. It may no longer be the center for filming motion pictures, but it is still big in TV shows. Also, there is nothing in the LA area that has sound stages the size of the ones at Pinewood in Toronto.

I wonder if any of the planets will look like the ones we saw in SG1? LOL

Pinewood studios is one of THE BIGGEST studio complexes in the world. 11 hectares, total size with the biggest soundstage being 46 thousand square feet. The filmed a tiny little movie their called Pacific rim, may have heard of it lol. But after all that you're looking at an 80 cent canadian dollar to American conversion. So that's a straight savings of 20% plus the heavy provincial AND city incentives I could easily see the saving something like 35% or more. Why wouldn't you film in Toronto?

According to what I've heard, the main reason is because Bryan Fuller was trying to do this show and American Gods at the same time, and since AG was being made in Toronto, Fuller wanted DSC filmed there too. By the time Fuller left DSC, the production in Toronto was already underway.

That was the Vancouver area in British Columbia on the west coast, not Toronto.

Yup. Vancouver is just north of Seattle, Toronto is just north of Niagara Falls and Buffalo, NY. Toronto is the home of shows like Orphan Black, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, Killjoys, Lost Girl, Flashpoint, etc.

How come?
Because they have actual land set aside for the 'Planet Canada' sets <--- It's a production shortcut for all sci-fi series needing a Forrest planet.

Seriously though - as almost everyone above has mentioned...Money. The U.S. Dollar goes farther and Canada gives A LOT of production rebates to production companies filming up there.

It's seriously hilarious, I don't even go up north in the summers like my fellow Canadian brethren and I can spot right away to 100% accuracy when it's a Canadian forest. Have no clue what it is, it just looks different and some sort of subtle way I can't even put my finger on.

I am still getting used to the idea of the soundstages of a Trek series being a little over four hours away by passenger train from my city. Never expected this to ever happen.

They will film in Los Angeles if they have to. I noticed briefly while browing news on the series that the sequence with Burnham flying through space was filmed at Paramount Studios Stage 16.
