Why is The Original Series still the dominant brand?

One thing though, Trek viewing on TV/cable has seemed to disappeared. I never see Trek shows on TV anymore, not even on the Syfy channel. It's a lot more fun watching it on TV.

MeTV runs the updated original series and BBC America runs TNG.

if TNG had kept the momentum/quality going from FC (e.g. if they'd somehow done a 'Borg trilogy' or something where each film leads on to the other) then Treks IX and X may have been their SFS and TVH and they could've kept on being the dominant Trek brand with XI and XII (possible crossovers with TOS/DS9/ENT)
Yes, I think it could be argued than INS was the real Trek-killer. TNG was a big deal. First Contact was a big deal. Then, very quickly, the reaction was "... meh".

The trinity of Kirk-Spock-McCoy has mystical properties. There's no way it can be duplicated.
I agree. While I like the new films, they failed to make use of this.
My friends and I always enjoyed the Kirk - Spock - McCoy cameraderie and the dialogues. Some of them were hilarious.

I only know the german dialogues, but I remember McCoy calling Spock a green-blooded breeding bull or something like that.
"Green-blooded hobgoblin". Sorry, but it had nothing to do with mating cattle.:rommie:

It's always been the most dominant brand from what I've seen.
I remember a time when everyday drug stores were full of TNG action figures and toys. At the height of its popularity, TNG was absolutely the dominant part of the franchise.

Because, at that time, it was contemporary. The "now" thing will always be popular in the moment. But, TNG etc don't have the staying power. They're not classics. That doesn't mean they aren't good, but TOS is better. It's a classic. You can't compete with that.

You go to stores now, and it's throwback TOS stuff (not reboot, classic). No TNG era stuff to be found.

TOS stands the test of time. The others don't, not outside fandom anyway.

When fans drop their loyalty to their favorite and look at this objectively, that's it.

Also pretty much all of Star Trek is instantly available for free all the time on Netflix.

I have access to netflix, but for shows like TOS and TNG, it's just not the same. It's cool to have all the shows on demand when you want, but somehow watching a show on the fly makes you pay more attention to it.

Especially when there's nothing else on TV.

My package doesn't have those channels, and all the channels that could show it, won't.

It just seems ironic that SYFY, of all channels, doesn't show Trek any more. You'd think it would show every series for hours at a time. You'd think it would be made for it. Not even USA or Spike TV.

The last Trek show I've seen on those channels were Enterprise, years ago..

Here's the action figures from the Insurrection movie:

Maybe I'm wrong, but what are kids or anyone supposed to do with these?

Use them as leverage to get the parents to agree to buy a cheaper toy. :)

"MOM! MOM! I WANT THE PICARD! IT'S ONLY $37.95!"
"No, Tim, it's way too expensive! How about that other toy you wanted? It's only $9.99."

I would watch Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley stand in line at a grocery store, not those new people. They'd probably blow up the register.

Thank you, I didn´t watch the original. Hobgoblin means "Kobold" in German, and it is a perfect match:devil:

Picard with a bazooka, They should have had that on the posters might've increased the box office

Because Spock. And Bones & Kirk & Scotty & Uhura.................
......

I think TNG quite suffers from having too many filler episodes (Holodeck and Lwaxanna Troi episodes, I look your direction). So it became sort of indiffeent grey mass for me.(I do not know a proper word to describe it). Also TOS is more colourful. If TNG was shorter, but had more episodes like I Borg, The best of both worlds, Skin of Evil, Conspiracy, Darmok, that episode with Scotty...., it would be more memorable for many people.

I think in my country is TOS known better, though it was in our televisions aired in 2001 for the first time, and only twice. Unlike TNG, which was here earlier and aired more times. I heard that many people in communist times used to watch TOS on Austrian TV, and practiced german by that.

It's the flagship, the reason that there is a franchise. Without TOS, there would be no other Star Trek. It is the foundation of the universe that has been built upon over the last 50 years.

The series and movies after the adventures of the original Enterprise became almost interchangeable with the designs and characters and storylines. But the original will always be the original.

Logical sir, supremely logical. :techman:

I think you need to go with your strengths, and TOS is the strongest.

And maybe because there's no subtitles in the name, no : to show which one it is. No Bloody A, B, C, or D.

* yes, I know it's ironic that I'm qoting one of those spinoffs to say how good the original is. How about that?

My son had the data and loved him. Took him to bed, wrote on him. Da bom.

I personally like INS, but i get the Meh response. "Time to do another TNG movie," some studio suit must have decreed. As opposed to having a story you NEED to tell and finding a vehicle.

I think here in the UK, TNG is easily remembered as fondly by mainstream as TOS - maybe even a little bit more so.

TNG gets bundled in with all the later sequel series and that's unfair. I think people forget just how huge TNG was during its run.

Of course, that was then... yes, TOS is the more dominant brand but it certainly had its time out of the spotlight. It hasn't been a continued dominance, that's for sure. It is now simply because the reboot wanted to return to the original source, and that's quite right.

yes for a time TNG took over completely - will that happen again? probably (maybe ST4 will be a Generations type movie handing over the torch to nuTNG)

It looks like they could play "Disco Dancer" with them. Picard certainly reminds me of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever. Otherwise, who knows?

Considering the previous disappointment with TNG movies at the box office, I do not see that happening. :vulcan:

When TNG first debuted, nobody thought it was possible to bring back Star Trek. It happened then, it's always possible that it could happen again and some new set of characters will the dominant brand.

Money, success, sales, merchandising, ancillary revenue, a number of different terms that all basically mean the same thing.
