Why is The Original Series still the dominant brand?

This is not a rant, more of a curiosity; I've noticed that over the past few years the Original Series brand seems to be the one CBS has been selling over the other eras.

The Next Generation and First Contact are still very very popular and are used a lot; of course there are book series continuing long after Nemesis, but I notice a preference to using The Original Five Year Mission more than the others. Other than 'that's where it all started' why do people think this is? Nostalgia? Even fan films these days are mostly set during this time.

Seniority? It's been part of pop culture for nearly fifty years now, while the latter-day shows didn't come along until decades later. Granted, there's a now an entire generation that grew up on the later shows instead, but TOS still had a head start . . . and it's not like it ever really went away. (Heck, the TOS movies continued well into TNG's original run.)

But it was TOS that was re-booted, not TNG et al.

TOS had more cultural impact, as something quite original at a time when there was less "competition," and had some combination of characters, settings and stories that audiences seemed to like. Otherwise it would never have warranted a movie series and TV sequels 20 years later.

Maybe that goes for the US. Here in Germany TOS fans have to be content with one TOS novel per year. TOS is not among the bestseller series at german publisher Cross Cult. At least we were successful with demanding Khan (Rise and Fall I + II). Looking forward to reading it!

It's the flagship, the reason that there is a franchise. Without TOS, there would be no other Star Trek. It is the foundation of the universe that has been built upon over the last 50 years.

The series and movies after the adventures of the original Enterprise became almost interchangeable with the designs and characters and storylines. But the original will always be the original.

"These are the voyages where the legend began."


As with many things in things in life, the original is still the best.

I have also read "Weight of Worlds", "The Rings of Time" and "Assignment Eternity" and I liked them all. February is Greg Cox Time: two novels of Khan and Foul deeds will rise!

I find it odd that TNG isn't marketed more today, as it was as popular as TOS, at its height. I think when it became a big "franchise"- DS9/VOY/ENT/4 TNG films- hurt TNG's singular legacy, as the franchise became a big diluted monster in the publics eyes.

Not to mention No time like the Past. That´s my favorite so far and I will re-read it, when Cross Cult is going to release it next year. You can find a small but stalwart bunch of TOS fans in the Cross Cult Forum. Some of them don´t have enough english knowledge to read the novels in the original. I thank my english teacher for being able to....

TOS may be dominant. It's even still shown on basic cable on MeTV in the states. TNG is still in second place, though. The others, including the reboot movies, have never had quite a hold in the public's consciousness.

Great. And, of course, No Time Like the Past is a TOS/VOYAGER crossover, so it's not like the various different flavors of Trek can't coexist.

Thanks for making the effort to read my books in English. I confess I've never tried to read to read the German translations. I just display them proudly in my office.
