Why is Quark so attracted to non-Ferengi women?

Aside from Pel, where is Quark going to FIND a Ferengi woman? For most of the series, they were not allowed to leave the house, much less Ferenginar.

I loved the way Quark brought forth a string of aliens I never saw before and were beautiful, I also appreciated the facets of those women; they were as complex as Quark himself.

Because the Ferengi are more enlightened than we modern day humans and have a bigger array of beauty standards in which they judge looks. Perhaps a leftover trait from when they also use
to not worship greed. Jason

No matter how enlightened you are, it can't override your body chemistry and let you apply your morality to who it is attracted to. No matter how much you want to.

But there's something to be said for the theory that aliens who spend thousands of years immersed in different cultures will evolve less specific tastes and could be attracted to anyone who looks like they might be able to bear their children. Human standards of attraction are left over from a time where, biologically speaking, fertility was at a premium. That may not have been true for Ferengi for millennia.

For Quark in particular there may also be a machismo aspect to it. Being seen with beautiful women on your arm makes your business partners respect you more.

One other factor to consider though in Ferengi/alien relationships is Ferengi hygeine. Ferengi have no problem with being dirty or grimy or not brushing teeth, and even consider that to be attractive. We can probably guess that Rom conformed to Bajoran standards of hygeine when he started dating Leeta but other Ferengi might not be willing to do that, particularly male ferengi for machismo reasons.

Even if all Ferengi women are not prostitutes, they have a pimp.

Detrimental and costly marriage contracts.

Detrimental and costly courting, that may not even get to marriage.

Before Grand Nagus Rom, Ferengi women are locked away.

You couldn't meet a woman without paying off 8 male members of her family.

Speaking of male members.

Gay sex is free.

As much of it as you want.

Everywhere you look.

All the male members you could fit in your mouth in one life time, daily.

The only reason to call for a brief pause in the constant gay orgy that is the wait staff at Quarks, is if you want to reproduce. Then you have to use your life savings to buy a female from her father...

OMG.

It's the reverse of the worst stories you hear about India.

They abort, and kill boy babies, by the millions, because for what you can sell the your females for, you can buy a yacht.

That might explain why, in a society with 24th century medicine, females are allowed to be conceived. I would think that a Ferengi reproductive specialist could produce male offspring with near 100% accuracy, probably deleting the female sperm before they reached the ovum.

In humans, a male produces X sperm and Y sperm. A female produces an ovum with an X. If an X sperm reaches the ovum first, the XX combination produces a girl. If a Y sperm gets there first, you get XY, yielding a boy. With our level of technology, we can't determine what sex the child is, but the Ferengi should be able to.

I did not know that.

In general, if a society doesn't recognize the value of females before it can select an unborn child's sex, there are... complications. It's happened to some extent in China, which is why they relaxed the one-child policy (despite their very real overpopulation problem).

I'm on a DS9 rewatch, and it's strange how Quark seems so attracted to Human (the women from "If only wishes were horses" / Trill (Jadzia Dax - maybe Ezri as well? Not there yet, don't remember) / Bajoran (Kira Nerys and his dabo girls) / Klingon (his wife) / Cardassian (Natima Lang) / Boslic (the purple-haired smuggler) women.
It also seems to extend to other Ferengi, as Rom and Nog seemed quite taken with the woman from Little Green Men.
Yet, none of them shows attraction to Ferengi women (Zek does, to Ishka).

I can understand a Human being attracted to a Vulcan (Sarek's wives, Charles Tucker III), given the small differences in appearance. Same for all possible combinations of the races above, they don't look that different from each other.
But Ferengi do look very different from those races. To me, it seems as alien as a Human being that is attracted to sentient Kangaroo-people, and never showing any interest in other Humans.

Of course, the Doylian explanation is that the episodes were written by Humans, and mostly Human males... but can we think of a Watsonian explanation?
For the same reason that Jabba the Hutt is.

Kor

Didn't know he was. Not much into Star Wars. Strange that Pizza the Hutt isn't interested in Vespa, then (he only wants the spacebucks).

Well, he never met her...

No it isn't. Their ears are a sensitive erogenous zone, not their genitals.

I'm not saying they are, but as a wise - if duplicitous - chameloid once said...

Well, that and replicative fading...

There's a book by Louise McMaster Bujold about an all-male planet... apparently, they use imported ovarian cultures to produce the necessary ova, then just fertilize them with Y sperm. The business of child production is handled by something called a uterine replicator. The book's protagonist is their answer to an OB/GYN, though he obviously doesn't do the GYN part of it.

We've never seen any half Ferengi in the show but that doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist. The only reason to think they'd be less compatible than other races is that Worf and Jadzia needed genetic modification for it to work so there's precedent for not all combinations being easily possible.

Another simpler explanation besides the 4th wall reason "It's easier for the audience to understand if all women considered attractive are also attractive to them" is that Ferengi males who don't live on home world adjust their preferences just through need to adapt. It's aliens or noone. Like two straight guys stranded on a deserted island.

Honestly Quark always struck me as a unconventional Ferengi. He tries to be a perfect Ferengi, but in practice there's some stuff, like his brother and nephew, that seem more important to him than profit. And from what I remember he also helped Bajorans during the occupation, always while pretending to just do it for the profit, of course.
And, unlike the stereotypical Ferengi woman, Moogie seems to have been the dominant force in the household when Quark and Rom were growing up.
So, combining those two things with the idea that the stereotypical/ideal female Ferengi was submissive, quiet and quite possibly uneducated, it makes sense to me that Quark started to prefer the women of other species. Especially those that seemed to have strong personalities and passions like Jadzia and Natima.

It's best not to think too hard about traditional Ferengi gender roles. Females are supposed to be naked, submissive, uneducated, and isolated. But how could they be effective parents under those conditions?
