Why is Neelix always so happy go lucky?

Mortal Coil is one of my favs from season 4. Most definitely. The story has depth.

Duh, silly me.

I forgot you're not to keen on stories dealing with death.

Not only that. It was the whole scenario in that episode. Everything in it annoyed me, from Neelix being robbed of his beliefs and his hope to see his loved ones again to Seven being such a divine character to bring people back from the dead.

Braga is known to be a militant atheist. I'm not sure about Berman.

As for Roddenberry, he may have been an atheist too but he didn't ram it down the viewers throats everytime he got a possibility to do so.

As I said, while I understand your reasons I don't agree about Braga. I see him giving us a choice of free will on what we believe awaits us.

For such a militant atheist, Braga understands the power of faith very well as shown in "Sacred Ground". I don't believe Braga to be a radical, that's not saying it isn't possable. I just don't see any intent to insult within his stories.

"Sacred Ground": Story by Geo Cameron, teleplay by Lisa Klink.
(according to the episode guide at startrek.com)
Braga was obviouly not involved with the creation of that episode.

ok but as producer, he didn't veto it either as far as I'm aware.

No, I haven't seen anything about him being against it or critical to it.

Maybe he's more tolerant than I expected, at least when it comes to other people's beliefs and stories.

Why is this dude always so happy and cheerful? Hes pratically useless, no one likes him, and hes ugly. What exactly is he happy about?

What TV show were you watching? Because I don't recall Neelix always being happy.

Seven of Nine, a divine character? All she did was use Borg nanoprobes to bring Neelix back from the dead. And she could only do it within a certain period of time. It was Chakotay who saved the day in the end, when he talked Neelix out of committing suicide.

The same show I was watching. Neelix was pretty darn cheerful most of the time - he usually was downright perky. Sometimes this was kind of endearing, and other times (for me it was most of the time, but I realize opinions differ), it was just annoying. So it goes.

They needed a happy-go-lucky dunce on a show where everyone one else was mostly serious. They made one in Neelix.

^ Yeah, but...the Doc was, like, 438 times funnier even though he almost never cracked a smile. Shouldn't the happy-go-lucky guy also have been the funny one? But Neelix...not so much.

To be sure...I meant they needed a dunce, whom everyone could laugh at for being a dunce. Always got the impression they created that character so that viewers could get some more practice rolling their eyes, or expand their repertoire of swear words, or otherwise use as a punching bag to liberate any frustrations. :D

Abbott & Costello.
Both funny but different types of humor.

Bud Abbott was the straight man and very much like the Doc. who's humor was more sarcastic than anything else. Lou Costello was the Neelix of the two. The bumbling slap-stick comedian that gets his laughs from doing everything backwards.

However, it seemed like Voyager got it's ideas for some characters from other American TV shows. Is it me or did Tom & Be'Lanna seem similar to Fonzie & Pinky Tuskadero from "Happy Days"?

Yes, but the difference is that both Abbott and Costello were funny - in different ways, sure, but both funny. In contrast, Neelix almost never made me laugh.

There are people in this forum who like Neelix a lot better than I do - do any of you find him funny? Not nice or cheerful or a valuable member of the crew, but actually funny? I suppose he must have been funny now and then, though I can't remember even once - but even if he was sometimes funny, that wasn't his schtick, was it?

I've laughed at Neelix for being a doofus bootlicker or for just being plain boring. But Neelix himself isn't one to crack jokes or make witticisms, if that's what you meant by not funny.
