Why is Captain Robau so popular?

One thing I can't figure out, is why is the Kelvin's Captain Robau so popular on this board? He was killed in the first five minutes of this film but he seems to be incredibly popular.

Is it because he's a Trek character with sorta a Star Warsy sounding name? I mean "Robau", that might as well be Jedi Robau or something, it's the not standard Trek name.

Because he faced death in the eye, remained cool in Chuck Norris/Vin Diesel proportions, and gave his life to help save his crew. This is from a younger man's point of view

Also, even in 5 minutes he's a vast departure from the usual, incompetent non-hero Trek captains.

Agreed. Different captains for different eras; for a chaotic era like the TOS era, Robau is perfect. Now him, I would want to lead me in battle, not some captain who sprouts negotiation-nonsense until I'm dead.

I've posted it before and I say again... left his ship, talked a microscopic amount of smack and was promptly gutted. I don't see the bad-ass-osity in that.

Now George Kirk... he was a bad-ass, big damn hero.

Because nearly every other Starfleet Captain we've seen onscreen (except for the hero of any particular show) is scheduled to get their balls installed next Tuesday. Robau's were factory equipped.

I think most people (including myself) think it's a fresh new face on a Captain's chair. I really liked the character, even though he only lasted a couple minutes in the film.

He is then brought for questioning, and what does he do?

"Who is your Captain? Is it him?"
"Then ask Captain Nero what gives him the right to attack a Federation vessel."

When they ask for the stardate, he looks at them like they're friggin' crazy.

Iron balls there, simply balls O'iron.

When you put it like that it makes compete sense. No doubt Nero saw there was no way to subvert a guy as brave as this, and his only recourse was to personally dispatch him there and then in a pique of impotent fury!

I have to agree that Capt. Robau did handle the situation with the right amount of machismo and a lot of integrity. He basically knew it was a suicide mission and still chose to leave his ship in the hopes that he could save his crew. That, in my book, is a definition of a hero.

I also have to give props to G. Kirk as well. After Capt. Robau was killed he knew the Kelvin could not survive much more. He gave the order to leave Kelvin and then realized he couldn't leave because he had to manually pilot the vessel. I thought it was a great scene when young James T. Kirk was just born and G. Kirk knew he would never see his family again, yet still decided to ram the Kelvin up Nero's @$$!!! Almost brought a tear to me eye

That makes the most sense to me, if only because this obsession with him seems to have predated the movie's premier by several months!

I love that!

Without Captain Robau's courageous trip to the Narada, stalling Nero for time, there would have been no time for George to get the crew off -- no Captain Pike recruiting Jim Kirk, no Kirk busting Nero and no Star Trek.

Captain Robau paid for saving the federation with his life, same as George.

Plus, he's yummy.

Erm excusing me so slightly, I loved Robau as well. For the opening scene in that film he re-yaught us the most important lesson from this shows history, the needs of the many, needs of the one. Thats why i dig him

As much as I do dig him, give me the negotiator anytime. We have seen said negotiator hop a weapons concole give an entirely too stiff upper lipped "that'll be the day" and continue to fire his ships weapons while all around were dead or dying.

Can you see a trigger happy TOS gung ho macho man sitting down and moralising on important issues?

The negotiators have the option to be more base in instinct, fly by the seat of your pants and by the time you stop to think I assure you, your ass will have friction burns on.

Because as small amounts of info leaked out about the movie, Robau's name got out as being the captain of the Kelvin. Since Trek forums abhor a vacuum, Robau was made a plaything of the posters.
