They should have let Star Trek just die out peacefully
Yes, because Star Trek canon has been perfectly consistent until this pointBut the new film IS NOT CANON
How is one to get around that?
You don't get to make that decision. How hard is that to understand?
Established canon is violated- therefore it is NOT canon
Established canon has been violated before by every single Star Trek series at one point or another. But the new film IS NOT CANON

Sorry. "Canon" (to the extent such a thing exists in a fictional presentation) is determined by the owners/creators of a particular work--not by its viewers/readers.But the new film IS NOT CANON

They are correct, it is canon in the sense it was in an officially sanctioned movie, but the setting is an alternate universe so it has effect on the mainstream trek universe.
What bothers me is this- by setting it in an alternate timeline, it means the 'future' of this new Enterprise crew is unwritten.

Because none of the other movies had time travel.![]()

Not too quick with the sarcasm, are we?Established canon is violated- therefore it is NOT canon

Incorrect- Kirk and crew traveled back to 1986 San Francisco to fetch whales, and Capt Piccard and crew traveled back to the 21st century to help Zephram Cochrine

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!
That's the best thing about the film. They can go anywhere they want from here.
And all those original episodes and films are still there to be rewatched whenever we want.
YES IT DOES! And that's a bad thing how? Oh no, they might actually create some... new stories?Established canon is violated- therefore it is NOT canon

That is the ENTIRE point of the exercise. Regardless of what the audience thinks (and only time will tell if it was a wise choice), the OWNERS have decided to create a situation where the "future" is UNKNOWN. They believe this will liberate storytellers from a too restrictive structure and allow them to explore other avenues. You don't have to like it, but it is their right to decide--not the audience's.Established canon is violated- therefore it is NOT canon

No, it means that they happen simultaneously. Hence "alternate timeline," not "replacement timeline."What bothers me is this- by setting it in an alternate timeline, it means the 'future' of this new Enterprise crew is unwritten.

A new timeline means the original timeline was ERASED
No it doesnt, the original timeline goes on as normal, this one is ALTERNATE. Do you understand that word? Go check your DVD shelf, Im sure all your old trek is still there. What bothers me is this- by setting it in an alternate timeline, it means the 'future' of this new Enterprise crew is unwritten.
