Why I refuse to ever watch this movie

I guess it comes down to the real Trekkers vs the newbie trekkies.
Ive been a hardcore trekker since 1976, and know a turkey when I see it- this film is a turkey. If the newbies don't know what Star trek is all about, then i'm sure they'd like this canon-ignoring film.

I do NOT concider the new Star trek film to be canon.

What people are saying is that you absolutely no basis for any kind of judgment until you see the movie. I'm pretty sure this is just flame-bait anyway.

Oh no, you didn't just pull that shit did you? 'Real trekkers'.

Man, get over yourself! I have loved Star Trek for decades and I love this new Star Trek too. I guess Leonard Nimoy isn't a real Trekker, eh? LOL, wtf?

It's the same as what they did to Doctor Who- That was a great sci fi show, and they had to wreck things by having the new Doctor Who series that is nowhere near as good as the original. I don't concider any Doctor who stories after Sylvester McCoy to be canon, just as I don't concider this new Star Trek film to be Trek canon.

I am commented on this page because it is about the new film- I'm not sure if only glowing praise of the film is allowed, if not, my apolgies to the moderators
Told you this was going to invite trouble.

Criticizing the film is not disallowed (despite the overwrought opinions of some posters to the contrary). Nor is your statement "disallowed". However, it is, perhaps, unwise to venture into a forum dedicated to a particular film (or show, if that were the case) and simply announce that you're not going to see it because it violates your personal notion of what "proper" Star Trek should be. First, if you haven't seen it, your opinion rests on shaky foundations. Second, it is an open invitation to scorn and worse and serves no productive purpose.

Look at this way--what kind of reaction do you think I would get if I went to the TOS forum and announced I had no intention of ever watching TOS because (insert any reason you can imagine that would be viewed as hostile)? It would be naive of me to expect friendly discussion with that as a starting premise.

You are free to have whatever opinion you wish. But do not expect much by way of respect for the opinion itself in this particular forum.

Good points, I didn't mean to offend anyone personally, my critique was of the film

OP hasn't seen the movie, and doesn't intend to. What does this information add to the forum in your opinion?

My point is that there are many trekkers like me who are not happy with a movie that flipps the bird at established Star Trek canon, and refuses to accept it.
I think our point is: why should we care?

Because there are tens of thousands of Trekkers out there who feel the way I do

Ooh 1976!

I saw it last night with my brother who's been watching Trek since it began (that's 1966 in case you didn't know) and he (and I) thought it was one of the best mainstream films we've seen in years.

Who's the newbie now?

Why are NEGATIVE opinions about this movie not welcome?

Actually, the movie tries really hard to cater to people like you. Whether it succeeds or not is a legitimate topic for debate. One that you're not really equipped to engage in.

I think the forum will simmer down on its overenthusiastic attitude towards the movie once some time has passed and people develop a more nuanced opinion of the movie. Right now people appear to be riding an emotional tide, and it takes time and reason for cooler heads to prevail.

You should at least rent the film when it becomes available, it wouldn't be directly supporting the movie in any capacity and you could develop a better opinion of it.

But the new film IS NOT CANON

How is one to get around that?

I might see it when it comes on Comcast, but refuse to see it in the theatre

I think you should just try it. You know? You don't have to like it, just see it to confirm that it is what you think it is so you can have more factual input to state your opinion.

We like hearing opinions of all sorts, just not so much the ones that judge something that they haven't seen.

Canon isn't determined by your opinion. It's canon.

Then you might want to avoid things like "real Trekkers" as elements of your posts. I've been watching Trek longer than you and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. NO ONE other than myself gets to determine whether I'm a "real fan" or not. That goes for everyone. Suggesting the contrary is going to invite even more trouble.
