Why I refuse to ever watch this movie

But the new film IS NOT CANON

How is one to get around that?

You don't get to make that decision. How hard is that to understand?

Established canon is violated- therefore it is NOT canon
Yes, because Star Trek canon has been perfectly consistent until this point :guffaw: The funniest part is that it is NOT violated here whatsoever. This is an alternate universe. Move along, your TOS DVDs are that way>>>>

They are correct, it is canon in the sense it was in an officially sanctioned movie, but the setting is an alternate universe so it has effect on the mainstream trek universe.

What bothers me is this- by setting it in an alternate timeline, it means the 'future' of this new Enterprise crew is unwritten.

Bwah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

That's the best thing about the film. They can go anywhere they want from here.

And all those original episodes and films are still there to be rewatched whenever we want.

Oh shit! You mean there's something actually at stake? You don't know exactly how it ends? I thought those were usually points in a movie's favor.

A new timeline means the original timeline was ERASED

YES IT DOES! And that's a bad thing how? Oh no, they might actually create some... new stories?

Indeed, that was probably designed to give JJ Abrams and his crew latitude in the sequel(s). On the plus side, you can view this movie as having absolutely nothing to do with the Star Trek universe in any real capacity. As for setting a bad precedent, the verdict is still out, but it has nothing to do with the mainstream universe.

Though I don't fully believe this thread is genuine,

If you, Kirk's Brain, are known by friends family and coworkers as a Star Trek fan...please, to avoid people thinking you're nuts, just say you saw the movie and it was pretty good or whatever.

You go and tell them you're boycotting something you've been crazy about most of your life...then you may as well just say you've been boycotting women too. Y'know, to help them understand where you're coming from.

That is the ENTIRE point of the exercise. Regardless of what the audience thinks (and only time will tell if it was a wise choice), the OWNERS have decided to create a situation where the "future" is UNKNOWN. They believe this will liberate storytellers from a too restrictive structure and allow them to explore other avenues. You don't have to like it, but it is their right to decide--not the audience's.

No, it means that they happen simultaneously. Hence "alternate timeline," not "replacement timeline."

No it doesnt, the original timeline goes on as normal, this one is ALTERNATE. Do you understand that word? Go check your DVD shelf, Im sure all your old trek is still there.

So, how long before someone declares that the CG spaceships in this movie don't look as real as the models did in some of the old Star Trek movies? Because I swear to God saying that is copping to being legally blind or terminally obstinate.

BTW, why are we debating the content of the movie with someone who hasn't seen it and refuses to see it? His opinion is uninformed.
