Why don't you start threads?

Well, if there's something I particularly want to discuss, or if I have a question I'd like answered, then I usually won't hesitate to start a thread. I can understand the concern that it might be a dud, though -- it's perfectly natural to hope that you don't get ignored.

In some fora, like the Trek ones, I've started threads that only got a few responses, but that's fine with me... I wasn't really expecting much more than that. In Miscellaneous, though, I've started two threads since I've been here, and both received over a hundred replies (one almost reached two hundred), which I was quite pleased with, as I didn't know what kind of response a thread started by a relative noob would get. I think the trick there was that I picked topics that some people have very strong opinions on, and that definitely helped my threads get some action.

At any rate, if you've got something to say or ask, and you want to start a thread about it, then I say go for it. I think most threads around here get at least some responses, often a decent amount, so there's probably nothing to worry about.

Starting threads is resource-intensive. It's fare more efficient to use a thread pool.

Aww, Kes, you bring out the best in everybody, which is one of the things i like about you. Regardless of how you post (start your own thread or reply to others), people will always come to respect your views and your advice, and for that matter, you need not be conscious. You're just so sweet and thoughtful; you're one of the few people whose valuable input and contributions I really enjoy reading; I mean, sweetie, your posts have such a biblical scale and significance to me! Like I said, any way you post is of extreme value to most people.

I'm just going to blush and go sit in the corner now. Have I mentioned I'm not good with compliments? And that it's actually very difficult to get an Indian person like me to visibly blush? But you've totally succeeded!

It's nice to have a positive impact on someone though, even if it's a small one. I do try to post around here when I feel that I have something to add, but so often others articulate themselves more concisely (and quickly!) than I ever could.

Still, I'd like to think that every poster here has something useful to add.

See, that's one other thing I'm lacking in understanding. Why do some people (as evidenced by my "69 Questions" thread) feel uncomfortable receiving compliments? I admit, I feel uneasy sometimes. While it's good to be modest, I believe it's equally important to acknowledge positive words that come from our friends, family, co-workers, neighbors, or even strangers. Although I feel uneasy sometimes, I just say, "Thanks" or "Nah, it's no big deal." Then my boss says, "What? Do you think I'm bullshitting you?!"

You would make an excellent therapist, counselor, ambassador, or anyone in a position to dispense advice.

Low self-esteem. My gut reaction is to disagree with the person and argue with them until they realize that they're wrong about me. I had a friend in high school who said I was the only person who could turn a compliment into an insult before the other person knew what was happening. I've made some progress since then, obviously, and now I can manage a "thank you" most of the time in response instead.

Thanks! That especially means a lot, as I am pursuing education in order to become a psychologist. It's a long journey that I've only just begun, but something about this just feels right to me.

When I start threads on other sites they tend to get locked because I'm breaking some rule (you know those things that nobody bothers to read) or ignored so I've just stopped bothering. That and I rarely have anything to post that isn't already covered by an existing thread.

My first thread here got closed a week later after 40 replies by a jackbooted moderator who shall remain nameless. Of course, that didn't stop me from starting even more threads.

Like others have stated before, I ocassionally start a thread in Misc., but they typically live short lives and fade off into oblivion. A lot of times a topic that I'd like to discuss is already there so I just read and ocassionally post a thought or two. Guess I'm more of a lurker...
