Why don't you start threads?

I rarely post, and am even less likely to start a thread... I'm not entirely sure why. I may have started two or three threads in my entire time here.

My social anxiety applies to my writing as well. I am much more of a responder than an initiator. Besides I think the most successful topic i ever launched was on people committing suicide so maybe for the morale of the board I shouldn't start topics.

Having a thread die and drop off into page 7 after three days on Misc is nothing to be ashamed of.

I agree, that's a pretty good run. And of course, a lot of the threads that go on and on are ones in which silliness hath taken over. Such as SPOCK SHOULD BE CONSTANTLY SHOUTING!!!!
I don't start very many threads, but I post fairly often.
If you're posting in 3 or 4 ongoing threads, I find it's enough.

QFT. As a general rule I don't bother with long threads, as they've almost always attained that length by degenerating into a circle jerk.

Because, well, I don't usually either. I think that at the rare times when I think of a topic to discuss, I end up talking myself out of posting the thread, because I'm afraid it will just lie there all pathetic and die, and then I'll look all pathetic and stupid. And at the even rarer times when I actually DO start a thread, that's pretty much exactly what happens. :alienblush:

So, as I bravely saunter off to start a thread that I've been thinking of starting for days and have been too chicken to start, is anyone else as neurotic as I am? Because, seriously, I am.

Seriously.

I have trouble sympathizing... because if nobody responds to a thread of mine (or even responds negatively) the consequence to me is... well there is no consequence. I do get annoyed when I post something where I'm legitimately looking for feedback and it gets buried... but I move on and start a thread about favorite alcoholic beverages.

I just made a new thtread in this forum on autumn and it got a ton more replies than I thought it would. The last time I started a thread in here was about two months ago, I think.

Sounds like my kind of thread. :D

Yeah, what's wrong with circle jerks anyway? At this point in my life, I'm willing to try just about anything. Kidding, kidding, ye puritanical ones!

Seriously, some of you are way too timid, too squeamish. I'm sort of introverted in real life, but I let loose once in awhile. You can't begin to learn to swim if you don't want to get wet. Come on in, the water's fine!

I'll join you. ;)

People just have different levels of comfort. Nothing wrong with that.

I usually just sneak any questions I have into existing threads with an off topic tangent or find a thread remotely connected and ask there.

I agree there's nothing wrong with not wanting to start a thread. But if the reason is that they're too conscious or they worry about the outcome, I think people are taking themselves way too seriously. So what if the thread fails? I post threads because I want to be able to express or share my ideas, not because it's a popularity contest. The sooner some posters realize that, the better off they'll be.
