Why do you rank TFF highly?

I've seen some interesting visual effects segments on youtube with CGI, still think models look better, but it would be nice to see if someone would take on the challenge to improve TFF awful VFX.

I think for me personally, TFF has a lot of charm and heart to it. The most powerful scene in that movie is of course the scene with McCoy and his father. Brilliant scene. And of course the usual fantastic banter between the main trio of Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. It also has an excellent soundtrack as well by the genius that was Jerry Goldsmith. Now it does have its flaws but its still a descent-enough film.

I wish McCoy took this a little further wondering meeting God; would he get a chance to see his father one more time? It's something I wanted to give McCoy a reason to be curious.

Such an interesting thread, i ended up buying the making of book.
Shatner, whether he realized it or not, recycled a lot of different elements from previous TOS and TAS shows… but they never really came together coherently for me.

And those shows weren’t the strongest of the genre (tho I do love the song “going to eden, yea brother!” In a strange and unfathomable way)

I always find the humor forced. The camping and climbing scenes in particular.

Was the book ever published in hardcover format? I was searching for the book online and all I could find was the other format. All of my Star Trek book are hardcover.

I don’t think so. I bought it as soon as it came out (yeah, even as a kid) and I only remember the softcover variation.

The only used books I found of Lisabeth’s book were paperback.
It’s a very fast read. They are about $10.

Interesting, per the book, that the story didn’t change all that much from shatners initial idea.

I wonder if he had an unconscious memory of TOS “the way to eden” … the basic premise is pretty similar. I would argue that the way to eden (if you remove the hippie element ) is a superior plot. The whole spocks brother and releasing from pain elements seemed really forced. No wonder why nimoy was so against it.

Not really, but the course to the Great Barrier should've had more of a struggle to get through it, like how the crew's 1st time travel attempt in IV. The cameras are shaking and parts of the BOP bridge is cracking and exploding; this presented the journey is not a picnic. Show the crew and the spectators have some fear, giving the thought that maybe this quest was a mistake, but Sybok keeps the course because he believes. The movie truly needed moments for an act of faith or a test of faith.

Yeah, the Great Barrier was a real let down. They were building up the whole movie up to that point....then poof. Nothing.

If they ever fixed the special effects that could be one area where they could at least make it look more menacing, and not like a malfunctioning lava lamp.

The novelization did make it seem more menacing (along with providing a reason for why they got through it in the first place, which was noticeably missing in the film). At one point in the book everything goes dark and the crew even feels a sense of dread for a moment.

Nimoy wasn’t opposed to Sybok being Spock’s brother, nor his mental powers. Where did you hear that? Nimoy’s objections were to earlier versions of the script where Spock betrayed Kirk for a while and sided with Zar (a Vulcan zealot not related to Spock) in his quest. The entire change to the script of Sybok being Spock’s brother and having the mind control power was in response to those concerns…

So, while you may not like the idea or the character , it was essentially written that way due to Nimoy and Kelley’s concerns with earlier drafts of the story.

But Sybok says it's not a danger.

SULU: They say no ship can survive this.
SYBOK: I say they're wrong. I say the danger is an illusion.

the whole great barrier danger illusion climax was fairly similar to the other big movie of the summer - Last Crusade. in fact the whole film while something of a retred of Way to Eden perhaps owes more to Raiders/Indiana Jones in it being a religious quest action movie

Who are "they"? A dropped line about past probes sent into the Barrier where all probes were so strongly destroyed or go missing/lost that Starfleet and all other Empires would never attempt passage of a manned ship. But no, we get "they say". :sigh:

The teaser should've showed a ship or ships with zealots making an attempt to travel into it and failed. Something like that could've helped the who are "they" line.

The movie's teaser was too interested in presenting a Vulcan who had emotions, Shatner didn't understand that Vulcans have emotions but the ones we'd seen just repress them. He didn't do his homework.
