Why Do we Need More Trek?

I personally don't care if there is more Trek or not. I don't care about the prequel movie that will be rehashing TOS, or any other rehashes coming down the pipelline. The only new Trek I'd care about is new Trek that is not a rehash of anything that's already been done in Trek, and also that equals or surpasses the good traits of DS9 (characters and stories that develop and don't get reset every movie/episode). Any new Trek that is less than that is not needed IMO.

I don't think they care all that much about 'we' the existing fans. They know that we will come and see this movie, even if it sucks. Lord knows, we went and saw Nemesis...and dutifully added it to our DVD collections, even though it sucked so hard that the sound of it sucking could to heard in the next galaxy.

Correction. That's blew. A common mistake.

Why do we need more Trek? Have you looked at a newspaper lately?

Give NEM some credit! It had the special ability to suck and blow simultaneously.

Want or need? What I want is satisfaction from Trek. I ain't got no satisfaction for a long time. I hope this movie provides it. If not? Well, best of luck to Trek in it's future endeavors! I'll be disappointed of course, but I don't need it.

I'd like it, though. ;)

I'm a life long Trek fan, but at this point I've become borderline apathetic. With each new show, I bagan to develope the same feelings I usually reserve for spectator sports; After a while it just begins to blur into the same repetetive, formulaic thing over and over again. In fact, it was my passion for Science Fiction in general that kept me coming back for more as long as I have; Even when Enterprise finally went Belly up, I didn't lose any sleep. When the new movie comes out, I'll probably go and see it, but by the same token, if they decided to halt production tomorrow, I'll have forgotten all about it long before it was supposed to have come out.

Similar thoughts here. I lost interest after Voyager, and the only thing that is bringing me back to the movie theater is because it's a TOS movie. I'll always welcome more of the original characters. The others need to rest, or continue to lie fallow forever.

I saw all the Trek films in the theatre upon release; this is the first one that I'm not sure if I care. As far as DVD goes I don't own 5 or any of the TNG films; so the movies haven't really bothered me for awhile, but it would be nice if the new film was good but unnecessary.

My Trek fix is satisfied by the DS9 relaunch novels; if Paramount ever decides to release the TOS Remix DVDs in a non-HD package at price that isn't rediculous I'd buy 'em -- heck if I was really hard up I'd be getting Voyager and Enterprise on DVD, but that just hasn't happened yet.

My daughter got me a Starfleet Academy mug for my tea -- does anyone need more Trek than that?

I'm with most people who hang out here... I don't need it, I've got all shows (and I love them all) and the movies, plus the DS9 and ENT relaunch to enjoy.

But I'm getting very excited about this new Trek and I really, really want it to be good.

Still, I can get my "fix" somewhere else, too. I'm one of those people who like the Star Wars prequels. I've got Heroes, Doctor Who, Torchwood etc.

But I want new Trek. I really do.

Speaking personally, I just can't imagine life without Trek. It feels like an eternity since May 13, 2005... But of course, those who feel otherwise should simply practice what they preach and stop encouraging Paramount to make anymore. Another opening weekend like Nemesis should do it.

I'll be seeing you at the box office though, no doubt. ;)

Hopefully though this movie won't deserve an opening weekend like Nemesis. ;)

because we need an excuse for the authors to write another nine-book series excusing the inconsistencies and rationalising the discontinuities with TOS...and they need the pay-cheque...

Do we need more Trek?
Absolutely!
Star Trek literally saved my life. As a physically abused child who wasn't wanted & didn't fit in anywhere on this planet, I was ready to do myself in. About that time they started re-runs of TOS. I heard in these episodes many things I had not heard before in my fourteen years... hope for the future, morality plays, acceptance of everyone. As I became engrossed in each new episode and saved paper route money for the models (even the phaser/tricorder kit... which I continuously patched back together after playing to roughly with them in the meadows and woods) I began to feel there was something more than a rough life on a farm in Ohio in a family who didn't care about me.
Eventually that message of acceptance helped me cope with accepting myself.
Do we need more TREK? You bet your ass! Hopefully the new movie and more will inspire others like me to believe and hope in the future.

Wow, cool story. What do you do now, if I may ask, and was it influenced by what you learned watching and assimilating Star Trek?

I ask because I have a very similar story. I don't think ST saved my life literally, but I too was abused and ST and other Sci Fi and Fantasy stories made my life bearable.

I'm new here... once I am allowed to use the PM I'd like talking to you privately. Seems we have a lot in common.
