Why Do we Need More Trek?

Also, we live in constant denial of the personal issues that we should be addressing in our lives, but most likely never will be addressed.

Star Trek XI will assist us in this denial, as the anticipation for it is already doing now.
Wow, that is a deep chasm of thought. I believe that a small part of my personality just imploded. ;)

Rule of Acquisition No. 10: Greed is eternal.
Rule of Acquisition No. 97: Enough is never enough.
Rule of Acquisition No. 242. More is good; all is better.
I'm pretty sure that all of those are part of Paramount's Mission Statement.

I don't need Star Trek but apparently Paramount does.

Personally I'm surprised they didn't wait longer to reboot the franchise and build up demand but there's probably a studio exec with his corporate bonus riding on the success of this film. I was looking forward to a longer break.

I think in the scifi world, Trek is sorta like the Cubs -- we want more because somehow we think this time we'll go to the top. And just like the cubs, Trek seems to be able to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

So short answer is that we want Trek to be a BIG THING again, like in the 1960's and the 1980's so that the rest of the world will recognize our favourite geniuses. We want vindication, that Trek isn't just a niche of TV.

Unfortunately, I fear it's already eclipsed by Americas Next Top Model, Hell's Kitchen and Moment of Truth.

I'm need my fix. I'm a Trek addict. I need more and more new stuff!

Gimme Trek! I need Trek! I'll steal for Trek! If I had to choose between food and Trek, I'd choose Trek. If I had to choose between water and Trek, I'd choose Trek. If I had to choose between sex and Trek, I'd choose sex. I may be an idiot but I'm no fool.

Sure.

Well crafted, produced and written Trek is a good thing.

The problem is that none has been produced in a LONG time.

Trek 11 looks to be as bad, if not worse, than Nemsamess.

Who's WE, anyway ?
Do WE even matter anymore ?
Paramount seems to think that WE don't matter anymore.
Did WE matter for the last two series ?
Did WE matter for the last two films even ?
Do WE matter now ?
Seems like TPTB want new fans, so it's back to square one.
I don't know about anyone else but it looks like WE don't count anymore.

So i'll be there in line next summer to see what they've done.
IF it fails it'll only prove to Paramount that WE don't matter and that, is that.

:guffaw::wtf:
You know you're going to end up eating those words...
Actually I'll bet this is first Trek in a long time that is both epic and good more so since it isn't coddling "the fans" which is usually the cause of someone to make an assertion based on not having read the script or seen the dailies... but of course you know more then the producers or the studio being a fan.

And btw what is considered "Well Crafted" Star Trek is always debatable and usually has more to do with the people doing the debating.

I kinda agree with this.
We also want vindication that Trek is actually a thoughtful and worthwhile story that is pointing us in positive future directions. Not that Trek is the sad and sorry pursuit of geeks and nerds that don't have a life. NG kind of did that for us.
But if you look at the world today, the real losers are those glued to Americas Next Top Model, etc. Trekkers are engineers, astronauts and scientists.
Yeah, we need more good Trek and more good Sci-Fi in general because of who it stimulates and inspires.

...if they decided to halt production tomorrow, I'll have forgotten all about it long before it was supposed to have come out.

ALL about it?

Why do I suspect that's not ENTIRELY true? ;)

Ok, so I may join in the BBS crying chior for a few weeks, and I'll probably get the Jeopardy questions right, but that would probably be about it. Otherwise I'll be too preoccupied with the future projects involving Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator, Indiana Jones, James Bond, Batman, ect, ect........

I don't know. It depends upon your definition of 'we'. 'We' meaning existing fans...or 'we' meaning the general public.

This is an important distinction.

I don't think they care all that much about 'we' the existing fans. They know that we will come and see this movie, even if it sucks. Lord knows, we went and saw Nemesis...and dutifully added it to our DVD collections, even though it sucked so hard that the sound of it sucking could to heard in the next galaxy.

No...they are much more concerned about 'we' the general public - and that very much includes the attraction of new fans.

And while both new fans and old share the requirement that this be a well-written and well-acted film, only the old fans care about stuff like canon - something that takes vast quantities of man hours do 'get right' (and even then, the hard core nitpickers will find something to whine about)...and might very well limit the writers in ways they do not wish to be limited, given their charge of writing a kick-ass good film.

So...given the choice between sticking to canon and giving the writers free reign to write a kick-ass good film...the answer is a no-brainer: Write the kick-ass good film and canon be damned.

And no. When they do that they won't care in the slightest about 'us', the existing fans. They will be focusing on exactly what they should be focusing on: 'us', the general public.

I want more of the good Trek, but I won't be sad either way. Most shows (excluding soap operas and other daily shows) and movies have nowhere near the amount of material produced for Trek. Already, I'm at the point where I am categorizing the episodes that I never want to see in their entirety again. There's too much on my shelves right now for me to watch and read everything again even one time, so I'm not overly concerned about the future of Trek.

Our lives are boring.

If there were no Star Trek, we could accomplish this with Heroes, Lost, BSG or if we're really in desperate straits, Stargate: Atlantis. So bringing back Star Trek makes us no worse off than before.

Sorry, but I am NOT watching Stargate: Atlantis just so I can hang out with you people online.

BSG, sure, but since that's on its last season, I guess we will need more Trek.

Correction. That's blew. A common mistake.

Why do we need more Trek? Have you looked at a newspaper lately?

I want more Trek. If not I'll have to go a Star Trek equivalent of an AA meeting.

It's a medical thing. My doctor told me if I don't watch a few hours of Star Trek at least once a week, I'll develop brain tumors. And as I'm lactose intolerant, I need specifically new quantities of Star Trek to combat my diabetes. I explained my situation to Paramount, it's why they're making this film, it's believed that this medical condition may be widespread and currently they have the patent for the only cure.
