Why do people dress this way?

I don't think that the sweatpants and slippers are really a fashion trend (except maybe the need to have a specific brand, Uggs). I believe that this is a way that college students naturally want to dress (it is very comfortable, low maintenance, just roll out of bed and go to class), but were previously not able to because it wasn't acceptable. People would have thought you were weird or a bum. I often wanted to dress this way in high school because of the comfort level, but my mom would have stopped me at the door saying, "put on some real clothes!"

Thankfully it has become more acceptable, and therefore people who desire to be comfy and low maintenance can do so without fear of ridicule. So I posit that instead of a fashion trend, it is actually a natural state that we now have the freedom to experience.

But there are some who actually go out of their way to wear this kind of thing. I wear it for the comfort and ease (I fuckin' love sweats), but I have seen girls get out of their pajamas and put on some sweats that actually look worse and rattier, and then slip on their expensive Uggs. And then they spend an hour putting on makeup and doing shit to their hair. The whole point of wearing sweats and slippers should be because it takes very little time. I get up, I brush my hair, I brush my teeth. Done in 5 minutes and ready to go to class. Actually doing work to achieve this look is sort of baffling.

I'd guess those people were most likely in work clothes. Work on boats is inherently messy. Or by boat show do you mean one of those ones solely featuring overpowered shiny penis enhancing frozen snot boats? Cause then I'd understand why you'd be surprised at their appearance.

It was a show with different boats dry-parked in a convention center that you walk around looking at and in.

I mean like, jet skis and powerboats, or real boats?

Other than the clothes I wear to work and a couple of suits, Most of my wardrobe consists of jeans and metal t-shirts, and that's the way I like it.

Jet skis, small yachts, powered boats, speed boats. No sail boats.

College girls who wear the rattiest sweat pants tucked into Ugg boots?

This is gonna' make me sound old, perhaps, but I remember when bums wore track pants, and if you wore track pants, you were a fuckin' bum. When did it suddenly become cool? And Ugg boots? Ugg is right.

What do you hate in the public's fashion attire?

Today's public university scene is all about being casual. I LOVED that aspect of it. I could rarely shave, let my hair grow out, wear sweat pants to class and ride my bike everywhere. If it was snowing, I'd throw on a pair of giant boots and trek across campus. It was the life...

Now I have to shave regularly, keep a trim haircut, and wear a shirt and tie everyday. Ahhh how I miss being a scrub :)

This thread reminds me, I was at the gym on Sunday, and a woman was working out... in Ugg boots.

So fucking stupid.

I love the people who work out in dress clothes. Cracks me up.

But I hate people who workout in flip-flops. I hope they drop a weight on their toes.

I don't if "the youth" do this in America, but the current fashion trend in Britain of wearing really skinny jeans, pointy shoes, shit haircut, and basically just copying your whole look from some goon in a crap band like Kaiser Cheifs

Really annoys. Mainly because I just think "why are you purposfully trying to look a twat?" And just the thing that they're not dressing like that because they like it, but just because they're told to by the trends of today. The self-regarding consumer slaves that they are, oblivious to the paradox of their uniform individuality.

I dress in what I feel comfortable in, simple as; I couldn't give a toss what's "cool" and what's not

edit: Going along with "I think I look nice but somebody else thinks I look stupid", a clear cut example would be early 90's style. As a kid, I thought this style was SO FRESH! And honestly, with the streetwear trends of today, I wouldn't mind seeing it coming back. I mean c'mon, how rad is this?!?!
I am totally with you on this. I've always loved early '90's hip hop fashion; there's so much energy and life to it!

A for fashions I dislike, I'll begin by agreeing completely with flamingliberal about little girls with "juicy" written across their butts. It seems like the trend of demeaning words on girls' tees, like, "slut," "bitch," etc, is finally fading -- thank god.

The only other thing I can think of that really gets to me is when people are dressed completely inappropriately for the weather in the name of fashion: girls who wear their Uggs on 95 degree summer days, or who wear bare legs and no socks when it's 19 (I saw three today!).

Other than that there's not much that gets to me. I love fashion -- I love watching trends develop and die, and laughing at the ridiculous fashionistas who take them too far; I love seeing trends recur decades after they went "out"; and I love living in a city where I can see such a variety of cultures and subcultures, and how their fashions differ. And as for personal fashion, I tend to choose classic pieces that are not likely to go out of style, and then to color my wardrobe with some select funky pieces and hats! <--------- (My hats always deserve an exclamation point.)

As long as those huge jeans that hang down to your knees are out of style, I promise I won't complain about anything else.

That's my pet peeve. Stupid kids with their pants down. Were I a teacher, I'd kick them out every single day until they pulled their pants up. Underwear hanging out? No education for you. You can't even work in McDonald's looking like that. Jackass hero-worship of prison inmates.

Where you ever a fan of an old 90's children's tv show called, Ghostwriter? There was a girl on that show, Lenni, who always had the wildest hats! I just loved her style!

When i first came to college in the U.S, i used to wear dress shirts, formal pants, went all out. I really felt out of place, guys were in their shorts, girls looked like they walked out wearing their boyfriend's boxers.
I have no clue why so many beautiful girls decide to dress so ugly.

I still wear shirts with proper sweaters and a sports coat, just with jeans so i don't look like i walked of a boat, but i think way too many foreign students gave in and just started showing up to class in hoodies and sweatpants.

I remember the show, but I considered myself too old for it (I was ten in '93). But I think I had some of those outfits. :D

Oh, and the girl next to the one with the hat -- I want her skirt!

You just described Hipsters. It's really an American thing but they've spread over here too. Those jeans they're wearing were probably bought from the women's section.

Which reminds me, where is Philo these days ?

Ugh, I hate that. You're a tart, I get it, you don't need to write it on your backside.

I like that about you, I like how you don't just copy out of a magazine. You're original and creative. :)

The thing about fashion is to stay away from the fringes of it.

I think the reason so many of us laugh at the 'kids these days' is that you know if you asked the kid "Is what you're wearing cool?" He/She would give an adamant "Yes!"
Check back with them in a year and they may laugh at a picture of themselves in those same clothes.
